[Weekly KPOP Chart] 2nd Week of May 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post – this time for the 2nd Week of May 2024. Still no luck on coverage of new KPOP tracks. Just four reviews this week – one of which at the start of the week and the rest all posted yesterday. Again, I am hoping to be more productive week on the blog from tomorrow. Let’s see how I go. This coming week promises comebacks from ZEROBASEONE, aespa, ENHYPEN, Mark (from NCT), DXMON, ITZY and more. Per usual, you will have to wait to see who I cover in the new week – until then, here is the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 2nd Week of May 2024.

Throwback Song of the Week

Each week I pick a song from the past to feature in this segment. It is recognition for the fact I listen to more than just the currently charting songs. And revisiting these songs are truly a blast from the past. Plus, I am hoping that this segment introduces new listeners to some great songs that I have enjoyed from my many years of listening to KPOP. This week is a song that I forgot about for a while (despite it being featured in this segment before). But it randomly appeared in my mind this week and I had to relive it! The song is titled Dreamer, which was HISTORY’s debut track from 2013. The track and music video features IU.

Non-Korean Song of the Week

As my focus on this blog is primarily on KPOP songs, I draw attention to a particular song that isn’t in the Korean language in this part of the Weekly KPOP Chart post. That song is the top ranking non-Korean song on each Weekly KPOP Chart post. The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is Stray Kids’ fresh new release Lose My Breath, which features Charlie Puth. It ranks in the 11th position this week.

The Charts

SEVENTEEN’s MAESTRO is the top song for 2nd Week of May 2024. Congratulations!

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 1st Week of May 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post for the 1st Week of May 2024. It was another standard week. Lots of releases (as mentioned last week) and I didn’t cover much of it – just what I perceived to be the big releases. Hopefully I have better luck this coming week, which promises comebacks and debuts from Doh Kyung Soo (D.O from EXO), KIM JAE HWAN, BM (from KARD), Kep1er, tripleS, Yook Sung Jae (from BTOB), Stray Kids and so much more. Per usual, you will have to wait to see who I cover in the new week – until then, here is the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of May 2024.

Following the theme of hitting hard as per the last few weeks, the song that did it for me this week is SECRET’s Love is MOVE from 2011.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is YUQI’s FREAK. It ranks in the 8th position this week.

The Charts

SOLAR from MAMAMOO and her solo comeback single But I are the top artist and song for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of May 2024. This one surprised me a bit, as I was expecting IVE or SEVENTEEN to emerge as the top artist with their songs. But nonetheless, congratulations to Solar and But I!

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 4th Week of April 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post for the 4th Week of April 2024. I managed to publish one extra review then usual this week. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but it is still something. The upcoming week is looking to be jam packed with multiple new releases from SEVENTEEN, IVE, SOLAR (from MAMAMOO), Xdinary Heroes, YOUNITE, The KingDom (formerly KINGDOM), HYUNA and a whole heap more. I am hoping to cover as much as I can this week. But as previous similar posts, all of that will come once I post the Weekly KPOP Charts for this past week.

That song is the top ranking non-Korean song on each Weekly KPOP Chart post. The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is V’s FRI(END)S, which I am hoping to review sometime in the near future. It ranks in the 11th position this week.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 3rd Week of April 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post – this time for the 3rd Week of April 2024. Work once again took over the last week, so I over-promised and under-delivered once again. There is an upcoming public holiday this week, so I am hoping to use that to catch up on some reviews. This is in addition to the album review I will be posting later today and also the usual few songs reviews I do during the week. While you wait for those reviews, here is the Weekly KPOP Chart post for 3rd Week of April 2024.

Another song that hit hard this week for me was AILEE’s Room Shaker, which I had featured in this segment previously.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is ATEEZ’s NOT OKAY. It ranks in the 6th position this week.

The Charts

Congratulations to ONF and their latest single Bye My Monster for remaining in the top spot of the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 3rd Week of April 2024 and for the second week in a row.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 2nd Week of April 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post – this time for the 2nd Week of April 2024. Work took over last week, so I couldn’t get as much out. And I have a feeling that my work might take over my life this week, so I am looking to draft some reviews to be on hand should I need a or a few early nights to recuperate. Plus, I have plans today for another album review and to begin drafting one addition album review for a 2023 album before moving onto the very long list of 2024 albums I want to review. So a lot of work for me. In the meanwhile, here is the Weekly KPOP Chart post for 2nd Week of April 2024.

I listened to many good yet oldies this week to get through my work. A few hit hard, but nothing got many repeat as B1A4’s debut single O.K.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is ZEROBASEONE’s YURA YURA. It ranks in the 17th position this week.

The Charts

Congratulations to ONF and their latest single Bye My Monster for debuting in the top spot for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 2nd Week of April 2024. This felt very expected, given how much I enjoyed the song from the moment I first listened to it at the start of the week.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 1st Week of April 2024

Welcome back to another Weekly KPOP Chart post – this time for the 1st Week of April 2024. How is it already April? There isn’t much to update on today aside from the fact that song and album reviews are on the card for later today and this week. Maybe a few reviews for some ‘older releases’ are in the mix for later this week. I will see how much energy I have after work. But while you await for the next review, here are the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of April 2024.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week, for the second week in a row, is MAX and HUH JUNJIN’s (from LE SSERAFIM) STUPID IN LOVE. It ranks in the second position this week.

The Charts

Congratulations to TXT and their latest single Deja Vu for debuting in the top spot for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of April 2024.

[Review] SHEESH – BABYMONSTER

That time machine I have been using the last few days has just enough juice to take me back to the present day, in time for my return to the blog. So, I will be relieving the time machine for a bit of a recharge and focus on more recent releases. And there are a few to choose from, so I am just going with the first release of the week – BABYMONSTER’s SHEESH. The new single from the new group follows on from their debut with BATTER UP and the all-English pre-release Stuck In The Middle (which I have yet to review). SHEESH also marks the debut of member Ahyeon, who sat out of BABYMONSTER’s debut and subsequent release due to health reasons.

SHEESH‘s title says it all for me. If I could end the review there (I technically can), I would leave it there and call it a day. No matter how many times I have replayed SHEESH, I cannot get over the strikingly awful hook that makes up the chorus of the song, It was quite grating to listen to each time and I cannot fathom why the producers thought it would be a good statement piece. Granted, I assume the attitude loaded nature of BABYMONSTER’9 delivery was what they were going towards. This chorus disappoints further when I consider the opening verse, which is where I thought YG Entertainment was finally doing something a little different for once thanks to the presence of the spooky piano. Long behold, the company didn’t. They went right for the same overdone formula they have constructed most (if not all) their releases with. The rapping in the second verse was fine, but I wished the backing was a bit more innovative and did not make the members/SHEESH sound like they were (once again) rehashing the same formula. The bridge held some promise thanks to the return of the spooky-esque piano, but this was shortlived with the subsequent sequence/outro. The producers thought they were doing some different with SHEESH. But in between the marching band, the whispery chant and probably the worst anthem outro to date, this all goes back to that predictable formula that YG is so insistent on using. There are times when the formula can be exciting, as demonstrated by TREASURE with JIKJIN. But in SHEESH, it felt tiring and overdone.

While I am usually impressed with the music video that YG Entertainment puts out, SHEESH (the song) puts me into the mindset that we have seen everything before. For the most part, the video doesn’t feel like it does anything new and feels like a rehash of the music videos that YG usually releases, particularly from BLACKPINK. However, I will give points on the fact that the music video sets did conform to the more spooky sounds at the start and bridge, whilst also adopt a modern flavour during the more electronic moments of the song. I also like the set that showed ‘paintings’ of the members during the bridge.

Based on what we could see in the music video for the choreography, I think my comments regarding the showcase of attitude stands here. Throw a bit of a stomp into the mix to really emphasis that the members mean business. If that was the purpose of the routine, then BABYMONSTER succeeded. If not, then it was a decent routine nonetheless.

Song – 4/10
Music Video – 7/10
Performance – 7/10
Overall Rating – 5.5/10

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 4th Week of March 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. Easter has come and gone (again), and I am back from my break as of today. Today isn’t going to be a review day, as I had a number of things to get in order to prepare for the short work week ahead. Normal transmissions of reviews for the latest releases will begin tomorrow. But until then, here is the Weekly KPOP Charts for the previous week – the 4th Week of March 2024.

The throwback song for this past week is IMFACT’s Lollipop (from 2016), which I repeated multiple times on an overnight bus ride I took at the start of my break.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is MAX and HUH JUNJIN’s (from LE SSERAFIM) STUPID IN LOVE. I am glad I can finally say this as this track has really been on my mind since its release a few weeks ago. The track is super catchy and fun sounding.

The Charts

Congratulations to NCT DREAM and their latest single Smoothie for debuting in the top spot for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 4th Week of March 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 3rd Week of March 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. Once again, I am hoping to draft up and post some new reviews – this time, for the Easter long weekend, which I will be on break for between Wednesday this week through to Tuesday the week after for the weekend. During this time, you will be seeing some scheduled reviews, with a primary focus on the recent debuts which I haven’t yet covered on the blog. So, I am going to make this a short introduction to get right to the charts and for me to move onto the drafting those reviews for you! And I have more than one already scheduled! So without further ado, here are the Weekly KPOP Chart for the 3rd Week of March 2024.

The throwback song is actually a compilation, courtesy of DINGO MUSIC, who featured DAY6 on the latest edition of Killing Voice. The main singles from DAY6’s discography were covered in this video, and it was a great trip down memory lane. Highly recommend that you check the video out.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is V’s FRI(END)S.

The Charts

Congratulations to DAY6 and their long-awaited comeback with Welcome To The Show for debuting in the top spot for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 3rd Week of March 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 2nd Week of March 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. Once again, I am hoping to draft up and post some new reviews – this time, for the Easter long weekend. And hopefully have more than one ready to go. So, I am going to make this a short introduction to get right to the charts and for me to move onto the next review for you! So without further ado, here are the Weekly KPOP Chart for the 2nd Week of March 2024.

The throwback song for this past week is JUNG HYOSUNG’s Good Night Kiss from 2014.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is (once again) TWICE’s I GOT YOU.

The Charts

Congratulations to CHUNG HA and her long-awaited comeback with EENIE MEENIE (ft. HONGJOONG from ATEEZ) for becoming the top release for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 2nd Week of March 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 1st Week of March 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. I am hoping to draft up and post some new reviews over the long weekend where I live after it has been another less than busy week on the blog. So, I am going to make this a short introduction to get right to the charts and for me to move onto the next review for you! So without further ado, here are the Weekly KPOP Chart for the 1st Week of March 2024.

ICYMI – 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards – Winners Announcement

In case you missed it, I have officially posted the official winners to the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards – the winners that you, the readers, voted for. Click here to find out which artist, song, performance and more were chosen as the victors of the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards. (This will be the final plug for it in the Weekly KPOP Charts post).

Massive congratulations (again) to each winner this year!

The throwback song for this past week is EXID’s DDD from 2017.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is NCT WISH’s WISH.

The Korean version of WISH is part of the Weekly KPOP Charts, but as the song has a corresponding Japanese version released at the same exact same time, I will be considering that in this segment (and for as long as the Korean version is part of the Weekly KPOP Charts).

The Charts

Congratulations to CRAVITY and their latest comeback with Love or Die for becoming the top release for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of March 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 4th Week of February 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. Apologies for a week of no reviews of any kind. I have been working hard to finalise and publish the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards as mentioned in last week’s post. I was successful in getting that out, but that ended up taking a lot of my energy. Plus, I was thrown off after posting it by my failing and dying phone (which I had to get replaced). Anyhow, as it is still early in the day where I am, I am hoping to post at least one review alongside this post – the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 4th Week of February 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 3rd Week of February 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. Apologies for the delay in posting this one. I have been working hard on the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards to post it at the end of the month, as previously planned. More on that below! And so is the rest of the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 3rd Week of February 2024.

UPDATE – 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards – Winners Announcement

Last week, I mentioned I may be pushing the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Award into March. But good news, I am on track to deliver it on 29 February 2024 – this coming Thursday, my local time.

This does explain why I have not been posting since Saturday’s album review – I have been working on it intensively over Sunday through to today to get the bulk of the post ready. Tomorrow will be final touches before it goes live on Thursday. I don’t have an official time as to when it will be posted, so keep your eyes peeled for Thursday.

I am hoping to get a review into tomorrow, should time permit me to. But the focus will be making sure the winners announcement post will be ready in time.

Throwback Song of the Week

Yup, I am back listening to some older KPOP tracks. Last week’s throwback song was B1A4’s 2017 release A Lie.

The past week’s non-Korean song of the week is TWICE’s I GOT YOU.

The Charts

Congratulations to IU, who’s latest comeback with Shopper, is the top release for the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 3rd Week of February 2024.

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 1st & 2nd Weeks of February 2024

Welcome back for the Weekly KPOP Charts segment. It has a little while since the last one, which was posted before I went on an extended break for a holiday. But I am now back and ready to return to continue the segment!

If you remember back to the last one I posted (2nd Week of January 2024), I announced that the Weekly KPOP Charts for the remainder of January 2024 were to be cancelled and that I will bring back the segment from the 1st Week of February 2024. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out as I hoped, so I have merged the 1st and 2nd Weeks of February 2024 together. But from here on out (until my next extended break, whenever that may be), the normal weekly transmission will occur.

Things will look a different as a result of the cancellation and merger, which I will explain down below. Let’s go!

UPDATE – 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards

If you remember a while back, I was hoping to post the winners of the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards that YOU voted for by the end of this month. While I did work on it somewhat during my break, I don’t think I will hit that deadline, and may need an extra week or so. I will confirm next week how much more time I need. Apologies for the delay and I am endeavouring to get it done as soon as possible, soI can move onto even more exciting stuff for 2024.

The Charts

Congratulations to (G)I-DLE, who’s latest comeback with Super Lady has topped the Weekly KPOP Charts for the combined 1st and 2nd Week of February 2024.

For those who are wondering, the golden (NEW) represents songs that were released whilst I away and have no been part of the chart system yet. The purple (NEW) represents the songs that were already in the chart system before I went on break (I have put them down as ‘new’, as it would not be possible to compare to charts from 5 weeks ago).

[Weekly KPOP Chart] 2nd Week of January 2024

Welcome back to the Weekly KPOP Charts for the second week of January 2024. As mentioned last week, I will be offline from mid-January to mid-February once again, and have for the last week been preparing scheduled posts to be published whilst I am away. So I will be making this post a short one so I can continue doing that. In terms of plans for the blog over the coming weeks:

  • I will be posting my final review for new releases this Wednesday (17 January 2024). This should give me time to cover NMIXX, YENA and SISTAR19’s new releases before I go on my break.
  • From 18 January 2024 to 11 February 2024, I will be releasing scheduled posts. I am aiming for one a day, but that depends on the number that I can draft before I go on my break.
  • I will resume normal posting on the blog on 12 February 2024.
  • Weekly KPOP Charts for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Weeks of January 2024 have been cancelled. I will resume tracking for a Weekly KPOP Charts post for the 1st Week of February (4 – 10 Feb), which will be posted once I am back.
  • The results for the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Charts will be delivered at the end of February (date to be confirmed).

So without any further waste of time so I knock out some more scheduled posts, here is the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 2nd Week of January 2024. Wish you the best and see you again in February!

FINAL DAY – 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards

If you have yet to vote in the 2023 KPOPREVIEWED Awards, you will need to vote now by clicking the link here to support your favourite artists, songs and performances of 2023. Voting closes 11:59 PM on 15 January 2024, which is literally tomorrow!

But for now, a lot of drafting and scheduling is happening in the background to make sure the blog is still active whilst I am away. For now, here are the Weekly KPOP Charts for the 1st Week of January 2024.
