[Album Review] Slow Dance (1st Studio Album) – Park Yuchan (JYJ)

Park Yuchan made his solo comeback a few weeks back with his very first solo album. Both the album and title track are titled Slow Dance. If you missed the review, you can find a link to it in the review section below. I was contemplating whether to review this album when it was released (like I do for most albums). Though, I needed very little persuasion after seeing a number of people requesting me to have a look at the album, along with the number of retweets and likes that I received on Twitter for the review. And I am glad you all directed my attention to the album as I have found some really memorable songs. So without any more delay, I present to you my thoughts and opinions regarding Yuchan’s album.

2. StrongStrong is that sleek type of song that you just want to continually replay. Like Slow Dance, the song doesn’t have that ‘KPOP feel’. The instrumental for the most part is acoustic and has this Western feel to it which I really enjoy listening to. I am loving that guitar that features towards the end of the song (the highlight of the song!!). But there is that odd electronic record scratch in the instrumental (at the start and after the first chorus). If you thought the song was getting boring in any way, the scratches attempt to regain your attention (as it is louder than the rest of the instrumentation). And boy, did they surprise me (I had the volume up). Like the instrumental, Yoochun’s vocals aren’t KPOP-like. I really like his husky tone and the melody just makes it so better. (10/10)

3. We Met Again (재회)We Met Again is a ballad fitting for an OST to a romantic drama. For those who don’t know, one of the criteria I have with ballads is a ‘swaying effect’. I know, it sounds very elementary. But you know those songs where the crowd puts their hands up and sways along to the flowy instrumental? That is what I look for. And this has that exact swaying effect. The melody was very beautiful. Once again, the guitar was nice in this song. The title alludes to a very emotionally driven song. But I found that his vocals didn’t feel that emotional. Instead, I think the best way to describe the song is that it takes you on a journey. Once the song ends and he sings the final line ‘I’m standing in front of you’, you also feel like you have walked the same path as Yoochun and arrive at the same place as he did. I can imagine a music video of him walking along a breezy road as this is where I want to be listening to this song. This was my interpretation of the song and the exact feelings I had while listening to the song for the first time. (9/10)

4. Thorn (가시덤불)Thorn is another ballad and it starts off with Yoochun’s deep vocals. I really like the raspy sounds he produces when he goes quite low. It gives a nice texture and immediately separates this song from the previous ballad. And I liked how he maintained the same voice from start to end. I found this to be very impactful and made this song stand out in its own way. The instrumental was your typical classical instrumented ballad, but it sounds so beautiful. When done right, I fall for the song and this is one of those cases. Like the previous track, the title hints towards a heartbreaking song. The lyrics that I can find seem to reflect upon pain and suffering one have experienced. He vocals just make it sound so real and painful. The song brought me to a standstill for both meaning and execution. (10/10)

5. Magic – Following two ballads, Magic changes up the mix with a more upbeat song. I like his vocals in this song. Instead of going for what he has already presented with us in this album, his vocals are rather nasally. I also enjoyed the falsettos he gives us. Both of these aspects combine to become a very nice vocal combo. The instrumental features this groovy beat that I think it rather infectious. You could feel the happiness coming off the song. Overall, I thought it was a smooth song. Not the most outstanding song on the album in my opinion. But because this song is surrounded by ballads, I am glad that there was some good energy coming from a song off the album. (8/10)

6. Everything Is Memorable (뒤돌면 모든 길이 추억이라) – This song is another ballad and I think he goes slightly deeper than in Thorn (Please note I don’t study music – nor have a musical bone in my body. So, this whole blog is based on what I feel and what I think of when it comes to a song). He vocals don’t remain too deep however for the length of the song. For the second verse onwards, he pushes his vocals out and it showcases his ability and variety. Instead of a ballad like we have gotten thus far, there seems to be a soft jazz influence to the instrumental, giving it a different feel to Thorn or We Met Again. It is another good song from Yoochun but I don’t necessarily connect with the song and hence I don’t enjoy it as much as his previous ballads. (7.5/10)

7. Graduation (졸업) – ‘Completing’ the album is Graduation, seems to be another ballad. But rather focusing on heartbreak or emotions, Graduation is rather uplifting and bright. I genuinely like the melody from start to end. The verses were very refreshing and the way he sings the chorus gives me the impression that he is rather proud. Given a song titled ‘Graduation’, this makes quite a lot of sense. I thought the ending was rather odd. It seemed like he pushed a lot of lyrics into a small section of the song and it felt somewhat rushed. But he manages to pull it off without a hitch and hey, it is another happy song to just kick back to and enjoy. I honestly have nothing else to say about the song, which is not a bad thing in this case. (8/10)

[Review] Slow Dance – Park YuChun (JYJ)

As time goes by, I become more and more guilty over the fact that my last JYJ related review was back in 2013 for Xiah Junsu’s Incredible. Their actual last group promotion that I actually reviewed (In Heaven) was actually back in 2011 (when I first started the site). And I feel guilty because I know there have been solo releases and group promotions that I never got around to review them. But that is all going to change now as I will review Park YuChun’s first solo release, Slow Dance, today. This is YuChun’s first Korean solo release since his release from the army last year.

To me, the track doesn’t feel like a KPOP song. I know the current ongoing trend is to infuse Latin influences into KPOP songs. And while Slow Dance is also on board with this trend, the song feels more of a Western song. And I am actually not sure why. There are a number of things that may explain why I feel this way. The instrumental features guitars that give the song those Latin roots. But instead of combining it another genre of music (which I think KPOP has been doing with the trend), Slow Dance builds upon these roots and creates a very nice upbeat track with an R&B touch. I liked the upbeat nature of the track and his vocals are very charming. They also contribute to this non-KPOP feel. His English pronunciation is very good in the song. I actually mistook some of the Korean language for some English, while also feeling how ‘Western’ the song was. Overall, I really like this track. It is smooth and easy-going, which are all factors that I enjoy.

This is a very nice video. I like the mysterious nature of the Spanish guitar player at the start and throughout the video. This is because we don’t see a clear shot of them. They are always in the shadow. YuChun, for the most part, dances in the video but there were a number of solo scenes in the video that had this weird vibe (i.e. when he bends at 1:20 of the video (see below)). Not really sure what is going on. Apart from that, the sets for the video looked really cool and overall, I thought the video was very polished.

The choreography looks nice. Not much slow dancing here and I guess it would be hard with an upbeat song. But the smooth nature in the moves is present and this compliments the song. I liked how they slowed some of the moves to really draw out that smoothness and make it fit the song’s title.

Song – 8.5/10
Music Video – 7/10
Performance – 8/10
Overall Rating – 8/10

Incredible – Xiah Junsu (JYJ)

Source: http://cdn.popdust.com//wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Junsu-Incredible-Feature.jpg

Xiah Junsu of the band JYJ made his long awaited comeback since Tarantallegra in 2011 with one of the best summer songs of the season to date. No Summer song had been my favourites yet, but this song is definitely one of the songs that I would reccomend for a playlist. For those who don’t know, JYJ was a band formed after 3 members of the then-DBSK filed a court injunction against SMent. Since then, the whole thing got really ugly, to the extent where more court injunctions were brought between the band and their former agency. Recently, one court injunction told SMent to allow JYJ to participate on weekly music shows, which fans have been dying to see since the start of 2010. The reason why I brought this up? I want Junsu to promote this song. I want him basically “Get His Swag On“. NOTE: I don’t gangster. I just quoted his song.

Wow, I was really impressed with this song. I was not much of a fan of 11 O’Clock (despite loving ballads) and Tallentellgra. This song, however, has that summery feel that Sistar’s Loving U had last year. It is definitely a song that one would listen to to make themselves be happy and feel like they are in Summer. Now, I am in Winter and while I am freezing my buttocks off over in the Southern Hemisphere, it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. So when I listen to this song, I feel warm and that I am in Summer. I would not be surprised if I found this song at a party of some kind. Definitely a party number. I found myself singing the chorus over and over again. “Something so Incredible. Something so magical.” The only few things I hate about the song, the start seems really unprofessional and does not sound that great for a party/summer song. And was I the only one who was taken surprised by the featuring of P Diddy’s son, Qunicy. It kind of came out of nowhere for me. His rap sounds something that was slapped into the song at the last minute. “Alpha-robotic girl. Baby, you’re futuristic. Shine in your vega world” does not sound like this girl is that Incredible, but she sounds more like a robot!

As for the music video, we need someone to voice over that start of the video. “Here we have young adult humans in their natural habitat. While old people a busy with work and bingo, this age group of the species is busy partying. Take notice of the shirtless guy with abs that girls can do washing on, he is flirting with a girl, a common thing in which young adults do at parties. Come back next week, when we view these creatures in the process of a hangover.” No, just me? The music video is okay. The dancing scenes were okay and the scene where Junsu is wearing the white shirt and sitting on the bed is okay. Not sure about the creepy girl who comes and go behind the curtain. I think security needs to check up on her. She might be a fan who is here to slap Junsu, so he can “remember” her. Get it? No? Also, the “bed scene” in the music video. What is wrong with the director of the video? Putting him in a golden suit and telling to make out with the girl, with horrible light designs. Urghh… Light designs and patterns make me cringe. Sorry.

The dance is okay. Nothing that great as well. I am technically not impressed with the tight tights and the shorts and the full colour gear which Junsu is in. I really cannot comment on the dance without a proper dance version, but from what I see, nothing that major.

8/10. Pretty good overall,  with a few tune ups, the whole thing would be much better.

In Heaven – JYJ

Oh boy, I absolutely adore this song. It is one of the best songs of the year I have to say. Quite sad that they can not perform it live. I want to see it LIVE. Now this song is very unique and adds a different feel to the kpop genre.

Now in the music video, there is a definitely a plot. It isn’t complex, however my explanation may be. Okay, so there is this guy who feels his girlfriend’s death. He goes backs in time (or does he? It could be all a dream). He then sets out by correcting everything he does wrong and makes her happy, not like the start when she actually suicides. In the end both the boyfriend and the girlfriend die (the girlfriend didn’t suicide however a car was going to crash into her without her realizing when she stepped onto the road. Her boyfriend tries to save her, but does not). In the end they are both shown in Heaven.

Now the song is creative. The music video itself links back to the title of the song at the end. Now its me or the song has a mysterious feel to it. The melody has it. I am telling you. The voices are really dominating even though its a ballad.

I also have to say that Song Ji Hyo and Xiah Junsu actually makes a really good couple. HaHaHa, sorry Monday Couple.

It is a really good ballad not like the first song on their album. To rate, I would give it 10/10. 😀
