[Review] Green Apple – Berry Good

Berry Good is officially back after over a year’s break with Green Apple and their first ever full-length album, Free Travel. This very underrated group promoted Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo back in May last year. It hasn’t technically been a long break for some of the members as the group did launch a subunit, Berry Good HeartHeart (consisting of Taeha, Sehyung, Gowoon) who debuted back in Crazy, Gone Crazy back in April of this year.

Berry Good just never sticks to one style of music. Instead, they change it up every single comeback. And while I can see this as being very confusing for some people, I like the breath of freshness that they always bring to the table with their different styles. Green Apple is another cutesy song but done very well. It feels bright and bubbly, mainly due to the synths that are present throughout the song. It stays consistent but it doesn’t feel repetitive at all, which is a huge relief. The chorus is quite catchy, being somewhat explosive in nature. The song is quite dynamic and while that can be attributed to the instrumental, I think the vocals play an even stronger part in the song’s appeal. It feels like a cute conversation rather than the girls’ singing every line. I think this makes the song more approachable and intriguing.

The music video is essentially a guy trying to woo some girls with apples. He has red apples though, whereas the girls enjoy green apples. He adapts to their desires and offers them ‘poison’ green apples (similar to the one that knocks Snow White out). And as payback, they take all his green apples (assumingly to stop him from doing the same thing to everyone else) and make him run around, while also having some fun on the beach. That is my take on the video. I thought it was good, fitting for the song.

The choreography balances cute and sexy, which I think it also quite fitting for the song (and season of Summer). Apart from that, I don’t much else to say in regards to the performance.

[Review] Crazy, Gone Crazy – Berry Good HeartHeart

Some of you may not know of Berry Good, who had many great underrated songs in the past. If you haven’t heard Angel, Don’t Believe, Love Letter and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, it’s best to get back to YouTube and experience all of their glory (just don’t focus too much on Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo‘s music video).  The group’s first release of 2018 is a subunit (named Berry Good HeartHeart), which features Taeha, Gowoon and Sehyung.

Crazy, Gone Crazy seems to be a solid song, in my opinion. The main point of a subunit (if we consider the past subunits of KPOP) is to go down a different route than what their entire group would probably never go down. This is exactly what we have here. Berry Good has had scattered concepts and sounds in the past, which seems to focus on innocence more than anything. HeartHeart’s sound is much more seductive and mature, which was a present surprise within the first few seconds. The vocal work, while not as impressive as in the past, does compliment the song’s style quite nicely. The bridge is probably my go-to point within the song to prove this. The instrumental itself does seem sluggish, at first. However, it does get better with multiple listens. The song is quite flowy, especially the hook of the song, which you don’t really hear until after the first chorus. There was some rapping but I think the song would have benefited with something a little more tempo and intensity, which would have contrasted nicely. But my initial comment stands.

There really isn’t anything that special about the music video. It honestly felt too cliche, in my opinion. Slow movements in the acting, the saddened faces. They are always done every single time in these videos. I don’t actually blame them. I failed to mention earlier how typical the instrumental felt before and I think because of that, the video was shot in a way to match that typical side. The only part that seems to be promising is the choreography shots and the flashy lights. But even that is very typical as well.

The choreography seems okay. I did like the telephone gestures they made for the chorus. It too did suffer from the typical nature of the song but it was still watchable and pleasant.

[Review] Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo – Berry Good

Berry Good has returned to the stage with a song that has probably the most annoying title to write out and pronounce. I am only joking. But seriously, need to send a few words of thanks to the person who created the copy and paste function. Berry Good last year returned with Angel and Don’t Believe, two songs that put the group on my radar of groups to look out for.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo is a change up from their previous songs. This one focuses on more a brighter sound and falls within the typical branch of KPOP songs, something that their previous track did not conform to. However, that being said, the typical KPOP sound did work well in the song. To be honest, it was a mistake to listen to the song while watching the video (more on that later), so my first listen ended with me concluding that the song was probably one to stay away from. But after a few more listens (without the visual presence of the music video), it is a really catchy song. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo is extremely difficult to say on its own, so obviously, it makes it harder to sing that line. But it made the song catchy. The instrumental uses a Summer tone, which made the song feel fun. The vocals were okay, but I don’t think it was their best (Angel takes that crown). The only probably that left me disappointed was the rap sequence. It was not needed. I absolutely hate it when they talk like that in songs because it tends to ruin the mood of the song.  But overall, it is still a pretty catchy track to listen to.

Unfortunately, Berry Good is not a money-making machine for their company. And sadly, their comebacks end up being missed. Which means that their next comeback would have a lower than normal budget. Even crowd-funding was required for this comeback. The lower budget could obviously be seen here and it was such a low-quality video that I can’t bring myself to rewatch. As mentioned before, I watched the video and listened to the song in one go for the first time. And because of the video, I almost decided to not return to the video. It is probably because viewers as myself are more accustomed to aesthetics and better quality videos, that this video felt bland and boring in comparison. On a better note, the use of colour was great, just the camera didn’t catch the boldness the colours added and made very feel dull. If it was shot with a little more money, I could see it being a typical KPOP video. And that to me, would have been an improvement. On another side note, but the teaser look liked it had a much better budget than the actual music video. What happened there?

I saw a live performance on YouTube today for the track. The dance is pretty good. Sure, it doesn’t feel memorable (it is quite generic) but nonetheless, it looks good and suits the song.

Song – 8/10

[Review] Don’t Believe – Berry Good

Berry Good has returned to the stage with a new mini album, Glory, and a new member! Johyun was added to the lineup of Berry Good just prior to the comeback. They previously released Angel earlier this year, which I thought was an amazing song.

I only started listening to Berry Good this year and they wowed me with Angel. Now, they managed to ‘slay’ me with this song. Don’t Believe is not your typical KPOP or Berry Good songs. Berry Good played to their strengths with all their past releases. This time, an element of dance was more dominant than ever, with the song consisting of EDM and dance music incorporated. But that didn’t mean that the group had to forgo their amazing vocals.  The song starts off as if it was their previous songs, like a ballad. But the song progressed into EDM and dance within a few seconds, which caught me by surprise at first. The bridge of the song was spectacular to listen to. The really catchy “Mercy Mercy” really caught my attention when I heard the song (Though I thought they were saying thank you in French for a few days). I was already blown away with the change and just hearing them sing the bridge made everything sound so much better. Loved the instrumental for the dance breaks as well.

The music video was boring to watch. Once again, that bathtub really annoys me. Who thinks of these places to put bathtubs? This time, they just left a bed on the rooftop as well. Because apparently, why not? The video attempted to be anaesthetic but missed the point. Like previous reviews, the shots look random and unstructured. I assume they are trying to tell a story, but they just don’t relevant. My guess is the girls “don’t believe” their lovers anymore and it seems like they are devastated. Kind of what the lyrics are saying, but some of the shots don’t make much sense, particularly some of the scenes with a pair of girls, such as the bathtub scenes. The music video was quite the let down with the song being so good. I have no words to describe what they wore in their choreography scenes. It was like a football jersey, but the backs were cut out and the wore something underneath that I am not sure of.

The dance was okay. It was their first time actually having a routine such as this. Their previous dances have all been simple or been designed for more ballad/slower songs. It was quite weak but they made it appropriate for the EDM track (just barely). However, you can tell that they aren’t suited for this type of dancing.

[Review] Angel – Berry Good

Sorry, just like 5 weeks delayed here. Berry Good is not a relatively new band in the industry. They actually have been around since 2014 and made their debut with Love Letter. They made their debut with 5 members, 3 of which ended up leaving the band in 2015. They were replaced by three new members and the current lineup includes: Taeha, Seoyul, Daye, Kang Se Hyung and Gowon. Interestingly enough, their latest release was actually crowd funded and this provided the band with surprising results as they overshot their goal. I read an article of it somewhere, and will link it when I find it.

This song blew me away. Well, to be precise, the high notes at the end blew me away. More on that in a little bit. The song itself is already very good. Vocally, Berry Good releases good songs that really bring out their talent when it comes to vocal work. Okay, so their vocals have been talked about. As you all know I am a sucker when it comes orchestra sounding songs, and this just proves it. I loved the instrumental and how it compliments with the pitch and volume at which they are singing at. The more electronic sounds make the song feel a little more KPOP-ish. Minor complaint regarding the song is the chorus. Not troubled by it at all, but it could have been refined further with proper English pronunciation. It does sound a little awkward (the “ooh ooh ooh ooh” parts) and doesn’t really reflect the rest of the song. It is funny, because the last chorus seems to be the exact same thing, yet that last chorus sounded less awkward and more professional. But more than the orchestra instrumental, I am a true sucker when it comes to the high notes and damn were they perfected. We are given what seems to be a whole minute of these high notes (spread out during that one minute though) and it just really captivates me every time I listen to it. The vocalist held it really well and just goes back to singing the next line, just amazing. The ending instrumental was not required and sounded mega different to the rest of the song. Overall, I think the song was really good minus the few issues I identified. Vocally, they are definitely sound great and it is really disappointing that they haven’t got the recognition.

For a low budget video, it looks really good. They took an overused set and made it look completely different from the other times we have seen the set used in the industry. The lighting looks really good and the editing itself is phenomenal. At first glance, you don’t see a low budget to it. Their outside scenes were pretty good as well. Besides that, I can only say that much from the top of my memory. I don’t have a solid internet connection to be able to play the video, but that is what I remember from the video. Hahaha… I really liked the editing, though. Like a lot.

The dance was meh. They are not a dance group, but more of a vocal group.

Overall, I think they handled this come back pretty well. I hope they gained something and don’t have to crowdfund their next release. And they need to be recognised for their talent. 7.5/10
