[Review] Call My Name – BLACK6IX

With this long weekend, I plan on tackling some of the previous comebacks that I missed over the last few months. I know I have attempted to do that previously, but unfortunately failed to continue it during the week. With some times on my hand and this ongoing isolation, why not smash out some reviews! First up is BLACK6IX’s Call My Name, which is featured on the group’s second mini album, Nice To Meet You. It was released mid-February and promotions for this comeback is still ongoing.

I find it very interesting that the song opened up with the line ‘…Pay Attention, People will die starting from tonight, I am a man of my word‘. Because a little threat from the singers to enjoy the song always help. Hahahaha… Moving away from that awful joke, Call My Name is a powerful dance track that is filled with angst and intensity. The intensity builds up in the song, as per the robust rush of energy we got in the final chorus of the song. However, while I acknowledge these aspects of the song’s overall sound, the instrumental felt rather typical and didn’t offer much uniqueness. The mixture of vocals and rapping in this was pretty good. I liked how they didn’t stick to ‘separate’ sections in the song (i.e. a dedicated rapping block’ in the song). I thought them going back and forth with the vocal and rapping lines made Call My Name a little more dynamic. Also, that high note at the climax of the song was rather impressive. Overall, a decent track, overall.

I thought the music video was pretty good. I thought the background to this video was very cool. All those lights (I am assuming the video was shot in front of a white wall, with all these lights and visual effects being projected onto it) really made the video look visually appealing. The angst could be felt in the video through the use of the shaky camera work and their outfits. The only aspect I am not too sure is in regards to the playful side of the video. It didn’t look that fitting in this video with such an intense sound and thought that the video could have forgone this side of the group for this video. But other than that, it was still a great video to watch.

There seems to be a bit of body and shoulder rolling in this performance. I find the overall choreography to be very fitting for the song. The moves just don’t have that memorable factor to it. It is definitely an intense routine and surprised that the members could pull off a live performance, as it looked very tiring, especially that final chorus.

[Review] Swamp of Despair – BLACK6IX

Also joining the list of comebacks from yesterday is BLACK6IX, who has returned with Swamp of Despair. It is the title track featured on the group’s first mini-album, which also shares the same name. I have only had one opportunity to review this group (Like A Flower) and missed out on their debut (Please) and more recent release (Alone). So hence, I have decided to review them again to hopefully introduce a new group to myself and you all!

Swamp of Despair starts off with an epic violin piece, which gives a little hint of what to expect from the song. We then are taken into an eerie opener to the verse, which I thought was really cool. It only lasts for a few seconds as the result of the verse starts to pick up, resulting in a very upbeat yet typical chorus. I felt like the chorus was nice and had a certain level of nostalgia, which I notice other listeners are commenting about. However, I wanted more of that eerie factor that the verse opened up with, as I also noticed that disappeared. Vocals were good, with some members having perfectly husky voices fitting for this song. I thought the raps were amazing. And as much as electric guitars are typical for rap sequences, I thought the addition of them here made the song even better. Overall, it is a good song. Not sure how it will exactly stand out in the sea of incoming comebacks but it has my attention.

I felt like there were some creepy vibes coming from this song that they could have fully committed today and made it a full horror concept. That would have been very suitable for the 31st of October (i.e. today – Happy Halloween). Each member is trying to escape from something unknown that has trapped them, which I felt was a fitting for the lyrics of the song. On top that, the members danced in a small amount of water which was either made edited post-production to look red (and hence like other red liquids). Also, the scene where the members are walking through and struggling in the masked crowd really gave that potential for a horror concept. Overall, it was still a good video to watch.

I am a little unsure about the short cropped jackets that they wore through some of the choreography scenes. While it seems to be the continuation of the short shorts and crop tops on male groups, it did look a little ridiculous on all of them. But that is just my view on them. As for the choreography, it looks tough and intense, which is fitting for the song.

[Review] Like A Flower – BLACK6IX

I try to keep up with the releases but sometimes I fall behind. BLACK6IX’s latest comeback was actually released on Sunday that had just passed. Like A Flower is the group’s first comeback since their debut earlier in the year with Please.

The song itself is quite good. Like A Flower is an EDM based song that sounds very standard for the most part. However, the song seems to change up a bit when it comes to the chorus. You hear strings being plucked throughout the chorus which gives it an intriguing feel.. I am not exactly sure what the exact instrument is (since Asian countries have similar instruments) but it reminds me of an Asian zither. And by using that, it made the chorus quite ear-catching. The vocals are quite good but at times, it felt like there was little to no energy behind them. I think that was the only thing in the entire song that could have been enhanced. But what stood out the most, to me, were the rappers. It was dynamic and added a level of intensity to the song. However, I do feel that a rougher and intense song could have given an even better platform for the raps to shine even brighter. While I didn’t actually sit down and review their debut song, there is clearly potential behind the group given the releases of both songs.

The music video could have been better on so many levels. The entire video was slowed down a notch and it didn’t match with the music. It was painfully obvious. Not sure if it was an editing issue but I am sure they could have done better. Some of the members couldn’t lip sync properly and it too didn’t fare well. But besides those details, the rest of the video managed to pair well with the song. The dark and tough vibes you can hear throughout the song were displayed nicely throughout the video, such as the lighting and haziness caused by the smoke.

Have they had a comeback stage yet? I tried searching for one but can’t seem to find one. From what I can see in the music video, the dance is good. There were a few moves that I liked, such as the ‘Flower’ move (seen it before but it still looks cool).  It doesn’t really feel impressive though, which made it feel less captivating.
