[Review] Black – Lee Hyori

All hail the Queen. The Queen of KPOP, Lee Hyori, is officially back with her sixth album, which shares the same title as the title track, Black. This is her first official release since her promotions of Miss Korea and Bad Girls, which were released back in 2013. In preparation for her comeback, she recently filmed her own variety show, along with appearing in others.

Lee Hyori always seems to try to stand out of the crowd with her songs or concepts for her comebacks. This time around, she returned with a country style of song. This is me being ignorant, but the start does remind me of the Wild Western films/songs. But what makes this song so good is that it mixes the country style with rock and some electronic influences. Together, they turn the song into a very dramatic sounding song. The overall buildup to the final chorus, which makes it almost sound like a rock song was pretty cool. I have personally never been impressed with Lee Hyori’s vocals. But her vocal work here sounds so amazing. The slowness of the rest of the song does compliment her vocals, making it seem clearer and add an extra layer to the song. Besides that, I don’t have much else to say about the song. It is a little dry for the most part, but overall, still quite good.

The music video is probably where most of my comments are coming from. This is a literal look at the music video. Lee Hyori lives in the desert where water is very scarce. She has a water tap at her front step, but it doesn’t seem to work. Every day, she has to travel a certain distance to a working water tap to obtain water. On this particular day, she meets a dog and decides to take it in. The dog, I guess, repays the favour by digging up a water tap that provides water to Lee Hyori, who ends up taking a bath using the water obtained from the new discovery. Her video seems to go deeper once you look into the lyrics. From what I can gather, the song is about being fed up with the current life and wants to return to a time where there was happiness. Hence, you see her doing her makeup for her job in a way where she doesn’t look too happy. But once she found her happiness, in the video’s case – water, it provided her with freedom and a smile. The choreography scenes featured in the video looked interesting. They seemed to match the interactions that she had with the dog, which I guess could be a representation of moving back to the happy life. A very interesting video.

I had a very brief look at her showcase and there does not seem to be any live performance of Black yet. I don’t know if I skipped her performance, but for the time being, I shall return once a full dance version or stage performance is uploaded.

Song – 9/10

Bad Girl – Lee Hyori

Source: http://www.yam-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/lee-hyori-bad-girls-mv.jpg

Lee Hyori has finally made her comeback with one hell of a song. Can you believe it? This is how you do a comeback, everybody, because nothing will top her and anything in her way will be crashed. That does also mean 2PM and Shinwa, for your information. Seriously, I have never seen a successful comeback with an really confident artist as the stage performer. Hence, why Lee Hyori is still here with us. Move over scandals. The Queen in back and she is going to make sure that she stays in everybody’s mind. Well, I guess I should let the “bad girl” do the rest. I think I just scarred you with my obviously great sense of humour. But let’s just continue right? No need for compliments here.

Okay, Lee Hyori sounds amazing in this song. She lives up to her name as the Queen. This is the first song since U Go Girl by Lee Hyori that has placed a really good image of her in my mind. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang scared the daylights out of me and sounded too futuristic. Here, we see her adapting to the feel and the genre in which recent and current idols have established for KPOP. Bad Girls is a song that I would compare to Lady Gaga’s Poker Face. I do not want to start a fan war here or anything, but both songs are quite equivalent. I would not be surprised is Bad Girls become of the top rated songs for the year. The song a really catchy beat that I am sure anyone who listens to it would find amazing. The chorus itself is amazing. Actually, come to the think of it, the ending of the song  sounds somewhat familiar. Some beach themed song. Forgot the title, but it sounds quite familiar come to the think of it now. I loved the “Bad Bad Bad Girls” and the “Let’s Do It One More Time”. They both add that Lee Hyori feel to the song, which is again, amazing.

The music video tell the story of how this girl, which I assume, grows up to be a bad girl (aka. Lee Hyori). Her mother dies while giving birth to this child, which in turn the child grew up to be an exact copy of. That, and also the stepmother. But that kids face, at the very start when it is  small baby is quite scary. Oh, I think I hear a horror movie on next door. Seriously, I love the kid’s bitch face. Amazing face. Someone make it into a gif, and send it to me. We don’t know why this little girl becomes so evil in the video. Also, the stepmother gives off that evil stepmother in Hansel and Gretel and also Cinderella. Also, in Year 10, Lee Hyori learns about the quadratic formula. You know that awfully long scary looking formula to find the x intercepts of a parabola or quadratic? Yeah, that one. Well, why the hell are they also learning it in Year 14 and Year 18? If they even exist, should they not be learning something else, rather the same thing. Oh also, why doesn’t anyone want to clean that white board over the period of 8 years. You guys are like learning the same thing over and over again! The ending seemed a bit random, but still made sense in the context of the video. I loved the use of the comic transition and the colours in this music video.

The dance too was really good. It oozed sexiness all over it. From the chorus to the same “Bad Bad Bad Bad Girls” part with the devils ear! Loved it and is hell of a catchy dance as well.

9.5/10. The Queen is back. And this is also the last Lee Hyori review I will be doing. I think 5 reviews for one artist, one after the other is quite demanding and repetitive. So, hands down, the Queen has it. Also, in the playlist below is the music video, the dance version, a live performance, the Miss Korea music video (REVIEW HERE) and her most recent music video to date: Amor Mio.

Miss Korea – Lee Hyori

mklh

Lee Hyori has finally made her comeback after 2-3 freaking long years. The Queen is back and is ready to shine with a new song that is totally rocking. She won’t be making her official comeback until the end of the month, but she had recently released her single: Miss Korea. Not the best song, but damn it is catchy. Meaningful, which is different, something KPOP is lacking a lot in lately (Sunny Hill, where you at?) My question is though: Who is excited for the Queen?

Miss Korea has that really old feel to it. Country-70 ish feel. Actually, more of a rock feel to it. The song is damn catchy. It is amazing and really sets us up for comeback. I think this is a splendid way to start making friends anticipating. The instrumental is pretty cool as well. The lyrics are very very meaningful. Seriously guys. The song talks about that is “stereotypical” of a girl in today’s society. Designer handbags, plastic surgery, beautiful faces. I think the song is trying to say: regardless of your face, your skin colour, your education, your fashion and your upbring; every girl is a “Miss Korea”. “Are you tired of being among the many names?“, “Will a designer bag make me shine?“, “Does it feel like it’s your fault when something goes bad?” are just some of the lines in this song that hit the audience hard (in the face) with its message. I really love how the song ends: “You’re Miss Korea”. Excellent song!!!

I love the black and white feel of the song. It matches the song quite well and gives a further, more in-depth “old fashion” feel to the song. I also think the clothes and dresses that she wears in the music video, as well, gives off that feel as well, adding more to the music video than what meets the eye. I love how the music video takes the literal meaning of the song, and exaggerates it. Designer bags? So Lee Hyori sticks all of these famous brands on a horrible looking bad, and then shows off. Best face? Huge eyebrows, just for laughs.

There is no dance to this song. From what I saw in the music video was not what I would classify as a dance, so yeah.

9/10. Really good. Remember girls, you are all “Miss Korea”. Now, I should be getting back to my chemistry homework, that or sleep. I need sleep. I want to sleep. But I need to do my homework, yet here I am typing this up. YAY!!!!!
