[Review] I (knew it) – Sonamoo

Following their Friday Night comeback last month, Sonamoo is back with the second part of their Happy Box Project. Up until now, Sonamoo has been at the back of the pack with their mediocre tracks. But I think most can agree that they are doing something right this Happy Box Project. This song alone makes me want to see what else the group has up their sleeves for future releases.

Last time Sonamoo released a song (Friday Night), I gave it a 7.5. If I had a chance (watch this space), I would easily bump it up to a 9. And that was due to the many listens that followed the review. On the other hand, one listen into I (knew it) and I was loving everything. It grabbed my attention as soon with the Latin-inspired instrumental, which seems to be a new trend in the KPOP world. But it isn’t just the instrumental that stood out for me. The vocals of the song were their best effort yet, showing off some variety in their range. It was strong and showed off a very mature side of the group, which is why I probably continuously return to the song every time I turn my phone on. The “I, I, I” in the background is extremely addictive, adding a little detail to the track (but it ends up going a long way). The only thing I think that could have made the track better was the rapping. It was good but it felt too standard for a song like this. But overall, amazing song.

If I were to describe the video in 3 words, they would be mature, sexy and mysterious. I really enjoyed this mature side of the group, which I think suits them. Some parts were sexier than others and I am glad they didn’t overstep the boundaries, keeping the video fresh (in a way). But for the majority of the video, I had the ‘what on earth is going on’ thought throughout my head. The way they look expressionless into the camera and in some cases, doll-like, was quite freaky and gave off that mysterious appeal I was talking about a moment ago. I liked the sets and their outfits for the video. It was definitely intriguing to watch.

The performance was pretty good. I loved it when the instrumental dropped, leading into the first part of the chorus. Their motions, for a very rough part of the song, were quite graceful. I like their strength and confidence, portrayed nicely in the performance.

Song – 9/10
Music Video – 9/10

[Review] Friday Night – Sonamoo

Sonamoo is back with a brand new single. Friday Night starts off three months of back-to-back comebacks for the girl group. They previously made their last comeback at the start of the year with I Think I Love U.

How can I my immediate attraction to this song in a sentence? Right off the bat, the girl’s latest song catches my attention for its extremely catchy feels and addictive beats. It is not exactly the perfect song because there was one thing that I think would have made it into a better track. What I would have liked was to see the retro/disco sound in the verses. Instead, it only transformed into that style when we reached the chorus, leaving the verses lacking character and hype. But by no means am I disappointed with the out come. I have actually replayed it an unhealthy amount of times since the song came out 3 hours ago. That is another story, however. Besides that, I love everything else in the song. The instrumental was amazing. The vocals were spectacular and the raps were just perfect for the song. All the elements worked well with each other as if it was a harmonious recipe for a cake. I just feel like the song is missing the cherry (improvement to the verses) on top.

The music video is a lot weaker in terms of quality. The actual video itself was really low quality, which raises some concern regarding the once thriving TS Entertainment. Quite disappointing actually. Once again, dancing in the water looks cool but it doesn’t suit the song style, nor the rest of the video’s stylistic approach. I am not too sure about the slow motion sprinkled heavily across the video. While slow-motion is used to highlight curves and beauty, it doesn’t really have that effect in this video.

Performance wise, I thought the dance was pretty good. Once again, not mind blowing. But there is enough to do justice to the song.

Song – 9/10
Music Video – 5/10
Performance – 8/10
Overall Rating – 7.5/10

[Review] I Think I Love U – Sonamoo

Sonamoo made their comeback with I Think I Love U on the 9th of January 2017. This is their first comeback since the release of their 3rd mini album and the title track, I Like U Too Much, back in June 2016.

The track isn’t too bad, but it just fails to capture the attention of the listener. I loved the sirens and the first few seconds of the song. It’s nothing you would have expected from a girl group who went on board with a cutesy concept. The verses in the song are quite good. They show off the vocals and raps very well, further proving the girls’ potential. The verses themselves sound strong and well defined with the retro-sounding instrumental.  The chorus is what loses me. The chorus felt too light and fluffy, compared to the verses. It also failed to be catchy or have any hooks. Overall, it made the song have a boring side and not stand out. Honestly, I feel like I have covered everything. If it was an amazing song, I should be able to talk about it. If it was terrible, then there would have been more to talk about. The fact that I only covered the song in a few lines just goes to show that the song isn’t amazing or terrible, it was just boring.

I found the video a lot more interesting than the song. The girls are mannequins in the trash, from what I believe. They wake up and stumble across a vending machine which sells a cute guy. To get the guy, they have to ‘insert a heart’. And where do they find a heart? In fluffy, stuffed bunnies scattered around the area. Obviously, they all want the guy to themselves, so they act shifty around each other, especially when they find a random stuffed bunny. In the end, all of them couldn’t find a heart, so they give up and return to where they originated from. Turns out, the cute guy is missing. Flashbacks showed one of the girls hanging back and finding a heart (very close to home) and end up with the cute mannequin guy. The other girls find out and start pulling him apart. The video was funny to watch. Besides all of that, everything else felt like a normal KPOP video.

Choreography wise, it looked quite nice. Nothing too complicated or simple. Instead, a nice polish flair was noticeable in the dance. While I complained about the chorus before, the dance during the chorus was very fitting and memorable to me.

Song – 4/10
Music Video – 6/10
Performance – 7/10

Cushion – SONAMOO

SONAMOO is back with their first comeback, Cushion. They debuted at the very end of the year (last year) with Deja Vu and followed up with Just Go, another track for their debut mini album. From their Wikipedia page, it seems like they had their own reality TV show in 2015. But beside that. I personally have not been hearing anything from the band , beside the fact that they have officially came back with Cushion.

SONAMOO debuted with a hip hop styled track which was did okay on charts. While their debut song was a lot darker and more suited for the colder season, Cushion is too a hip hop themed song, but better suited for the Summer. I personally think this is a great song. It is quite catchy and addictive to listen to. I have one issue though. I did some research and it turns out they were singing “He’s like a cushion”, while 100% of the times I have heard the song (and it has been quite a lot of times), I hear “It’s like cushion”. So it may have blew my mind but at the same time confused the living soul out of me. I really enjoy the rapping bit afterwards the chorus each time. I thought that was probably the most addictive part of the song. I felt like their vocal work and rapping was improved quite a bit since their debut. I feel like they are quite comfortable with their voices.  The ending was probably the best ending to a song for a very long time. I am very impressed.

As for the music video, there is a very big mismatch with the whole video. The song has hip hop vibe to it and sounds like a “powerful women” style song. So why are there scenes in the video of the girls acting more like cute girls. There is nothing wrong with it, I just feel it doesn’t fit the video that well. Beside that, there really is not much to comment on. Beside the fact how cringe-worthy the video was (with their acting) and how the set looks like it was used somewhere else and just bought by the company. Like seriously? What happened to good old uniqueness to give your artists a little recognition.  I am glad for the amount of cushion in the video. But cushion fighting? You were singing about him being soft like a cushion, but you ended up killing them cushions. Yikes.

The dance has that hip hop and sexy vibe throughout it. I enjoyed it. I thought that rap sequence after the chorus was pretty unique. The chorus dance was quite nice and fits in with the song.

Overall, the song was nice and dance was cool. Music video could have been a little bit better. 7/10

Deja Vu – Sonamoo

The last debut of 2014. But one of the first bands to promote their songs in the new year. Sonamoo is a 7 girl group from TS Entertainment, which houses big names such as Secret and Untouchable (and until recently, B.A.P). The group consist of Sumin, Minjae, D.ana, Nahyun, Euijin, High D and Sun. The group has been long anticipated, with their debut concept giving them the name: “female B.A.P”.

Some people say this song does not reach their expectations. But to me, it hits all the high notes. It is a powerful song. It has a feminine side to it, however it is still equally as powerful as past debuts that made us go wow. I personally really liked this song. It had that hip hop vibe that does not overtake the whole song. I have to be honest though. The vocals were rather weak in this song. The second rapper (the one with the black bob cut) in the song really does not suit this style. Instead her voice kind of conflicts with the enforcing sound the song has. There were good things in the song. It has been a very long time since I heard of a dance break in the song. And the rapping before each chorus sounds so freaking amazing. Those were my most favourite parts of the song.  Overall, a pretty solid song for debut.

The music video was okay. I liked the big sets and how it really does not seem as generic and boring as some other sets. Like that one set that appears in all music videos. Though, there really is no plot. I guess the literal plot is where the girls goes around dark rooms to find light. I am sure that they are finding something a little more than light, maybe love? But beside that, the msuic video was okay to watch. Though some kind of plot with a character of the opposite sex could have made the music video a little better. You know, to illustrate that “love” that is behind the title of the song and its lyrics.

The dance was pretty good. There is one complaint. I probably sound really stupid for this. But what is with the “cute” looks the stylist are trying to go after? One of them has pony tails which to me, personally, does not make some look tough and powerful. Combined with the smiling that I have been seeing on the stage, and I am really confused about what is going on actually. However dance was amazing and really strong.

A strong and powerful debut. It makes my “heart pound pound “. Excuse me for that lame reference to the song. I am sure you guys could have made a more smarter and better reference to the lyrics. 7.1/10
