[Review] Missing – TRCNG

So TRCNG is a group that I completely forgot about. Their last comeback was in January 2018 with Wolf Baby. On the Korean front, they haven’t been around much, with the exception for the Paradise single they release a few months back (which I somehow completely missed). But apparently, Wolf Baby wasn’t their only 2018 activity. The group made their Japanese comeback with Spectrum and Game Changer (based on their Wikipedia profile). I also somehow missed these. But today, we are here to discuss their latest comeback single, Missing.

While this male group has done dance-styled tracks before, there is a little uniqueness to Missing that really shifts a different light to shine on them. It might be the mature side we get through this track, which is very different from their last comeback. I think the vocals were really good. For a dance track, there is a fair amount of melodic flow in there that draws my attention to the track. The chorus featured extra definition, which really helped with its memorability. Listening to the song last night for the first time. I was literally blown away from how well presented and cohesive the chorus came to be. That feeling has died down now, but there is still a lot within the track that amazes me. The synth-heavy instrumental had a touch of lightness to it, which complimented the melodic nature I mentioned before. I really liked that deep mellow whistle-like tune that opened up the track. I think the only element that the song could have used was a little more rapping. They had a bit there. But it felt scarce and the track could have used some intensity, such as the final moments of the bridge.

Watching the video for the first time, I was wondering where the company brand was. Usually, it is featured at the start of the video, But for this video, they opted for the end, which was interesting. A story is clearly told, which multiple storylines featured throughout the video. However, without the aid of the lyrics, I can’t really tell what is going on. Though, I think a strong sense of friendship is showcased throughout the video. I really like the different camera shots shown, especially during the choreography sections. But the outfits weren’t that good looking.

That whole routine during the ‘deep mellow whistle-like tune’ introduction was probably my favourite bit. It might be the way the video was shot. But when I saw initially, I had to replay it a number of times because it looked so cool. I also really liked their chorus routine. Not exactly sure how to describe it. But it felt like there was a lot going on in an artistic sense.

[Review] Wolf Baby – TRCNG

Kicking off 2018 is TRCNG, who are returning with their first comeback ever. The group previously made their debut with Spectrum back in October 2017. Their latest mini-album, Who Am I, was released today which features their title track, Wolf Baby.

The dynamic nature of Wolf Baby does remind of songs that could have been released a few years back. I am not saying it sounds outdated but rather it does prick something in my memory bank. I like the upbeat rock-dance instrumental, which manages to make you feel energised and positive. There were various moments (such as 1:37 when we enter the second verse and the intro of the track) that gave a really playful sound as well, which felt very fitting for the song. Usually, those parts would have felt childish but they incorporated in a way that works with the rest of the track. The chorus was quite catchy. The vocals were good but I don’t think they are the standout element of the song. Actually, I felt the most memorable part of the song has to be the rap sequence that occurred during the bridge. It was by far the coolest section of the entire song and provided that extra punch of energy from keeping it too repetitive.

The playful vibes from the song are definitely seen visually throughout the video, which made it into a humorous video. These wolves are what you think they are. The mouths aren’t covered in blood but rather the excessive amount of tomato sauce (or ketchup) they drizzle on their sandwiches. The wolves also play with chainsaws but that clearly backfired with the good old fake hand trick. The sets were creepy (in a good way) which goes hand-in-hand with their visuals for this comeback.

TRCNG managed to throw the fierceness that you would expect from a wolf-themed concept and the cuteness that I believe fits their age range together quite well. The performance was definitely captivating to watch. That introduction was amazing with all the handstands and backflips occurring consecutively.

[Review] Spectrum – TRCNG

Following the likes of Secret, B.A.P and Sonamoo, TS Entertainment has finally debut TRCNG, a 10 member boy group with the average age of 15 (way to go for making me look and feel old). The name of the group stands for ‘Teen Rising Champion in a New Generation’. Their debut features the title track Spectrum.

Without doubt, TS Entertainment wanted to replicate the same wow factor that Warrior brought for B.A.P without making Spectrum feel too similar to the other song. And while that impact is there, the song remains in an awkward position between meh and wow. And while that is a broad spectrum (hahaha), it just shows that part of me feels like this song is great but the other part felt like it could have been better (which is something I have been noticing about myself for the past few reviews). The intensity can be felt throughout the song. It has this very tough but at the same time, somewhat innocent vibe from the young age group.  The main issue is that I didn’t feel like the song peaked. Instead, from the start to the end, it remained fairly neutral and linear. It could have gone for a catchy chorus but I don’t mind it. Moving along, it is the vocals and the raps that give the song that needed colour and make me go wow. I don’t think I heard any disappointing vocals or raps throughout the song, which is quite promising for the group. Overall, I would say this song ranks towards the other end of the spectrum and that if they put out a song that showed a little more variety, I think they could go a long way.

The music video is a tad confusing. To me, it feels like they are in alternate realities and what they do in one reality, the exact same thing happens in the other. Which doesn’t necessarily mean an alternate reality, but hopefully you get what I am trying to get at. The darkness of the video fits the edgy and tough vibes that they are going for. Besides that, there isn’t much else to the video that I find worth talking about.

[Updated] In response to my previous comments, these young boys managed to pull off a performance that I could not even dream of even trying.  The toughness that they had going on was good but I thought that it was borderline exaggerated at times. But overall, it was a decent choreography to watch.
