[Review] Mysterious – Hello Venus

Hello Venus has finally returned to the stage. From memory, they did not promote the songs that they released last year. The tracks they released last year (Glow and Paradise) are also included in the recently released mini album, which title track is Mysterious. Last time they were on stage (which was 2015), the group promoted I’m Ill.

I know it is only the start of the year. But this has to be one of the best songs of 2017. I am in love with it. It has been replaying for a number of days already. It is really catchy and addictive to listen to it. What caught my attention was the whistling in the introduction. It is bright and very interesting. I know that there are a few songs that use the whistle intro, but this one does it perfectly and leads very nicely into the song. The verses were a little bland for my taste. The chorus really picks up the song and gives it an extra breath of life into it. Overall, vocals were okay, but there weren’t any stand-out moments. The instrumental provided a great backing for the vocals with the brass instruments taking the instrumental to another level. There is also a nice swing sound in the song. The rapping was very short and that is also another disappointment. There should have been a longer rap portion because: a) the song needs it (what we heard in the chorus was perfect and fitting. It just needed to be extended to give it more impact) and b) the rapper sounds amazing. But while I did find a few flaws in the track, I am still playing this song and will definitely continue with it.

The music video stars Cha Eun Woo from Astro and Seo Kang Joon. Both are label mates of Hello Venus, who are under Fantagio. I guess the plot of the video was that the girls were investigating a very mysterious man, who in this case is Seo Kang Joon. Not sure about Cha Eun Woo’s character, though. I know he plays the conductor or a staff member on the train. But is he helping the mysterious guy or the girls? I am assuming he is helping the guy. The ending could have been many times better. Given the rest of the video, the ending was horrible. I would have expected a plot twist or at least an answer to who the guy is. But instead… ‘Hello Venus?? ‘. Overall, the video was fun to watch (minus the ending of the video). This has to be one of the best videos released by Hello Venus. The sets were bright and vibrant, fitting that nature of the song. Their acting is okay. Seo Kang Joon and Cha Eun Woo did a pretty good job (despite me not knowing what side Eun Woo was on – his facial expressions were pretty good).

The choreography for Mysterious was pretty good. It is fitting for the song and doesn’t necessary go over the top this time. The more mature and feminine concept which they were going for really works well with the group.

Rating – 7.5/10

I’m Ill – Hello Venus

Another artist in need of some recognition. Yeah, out of all the bands and groups out there at the moment, Hello Venus has to be one of the few to drastically change their image around. But they are back with a club themed song for us to listen to. They previously made their long awaited comeback with the sexy concept late last year and came back with another sexy concept, Wiggle Wiggle, at the start of the year. Now, they are “ill”? Ummm… Say what?

Yeah, the title of the song really got me. It is not your typical title of a song. To be honest, I would not play a song titled as “I’m Ill” anywhere, mainly because that would give off the wrong message. And that is the last thing I want to do. But beside that, the song is pretty cool. I enjoyed the club feel that it had going for it. I don’t know why, but I automatically feel old when I need to review these club and electro style songs. I feel like my words are quite disconnected with the actual song. But I thought the chorus was catchy and the drop was pretty addictive. Honestly been dancing in my chair to this song. The “dance break” is what I am going to dub the part straight after the 2nd time the chorus is sung. Honestly, that sound. But honestly, I would play this song when I want some blood pumping through my veins. Great party song.

The music video was exactly what I expected from Hello Venus.  Dude in club gets attracted to the girls and starts falling for them. But damn, was he a playboy or what? He went from one girl to the next in like seconds. But yeah, it was a pretty boring video. There was not anything to hook me onto watching it more and more. While the flashing lights suited the song, I felt that they could have been taken away. And the girls should have danced at a club or party scene to fit the overall concept they are going for. I have to be honest, the girls look really hot in this video. While I do like the contrast between innocent Hello Venus and party Hello Venus, I don’t think this is the right video to have both of them in it. I think the party scenes and them club scenes were enough to suffice for the video.

The dance was meh. No twerking. Much disappointed. But beside that, the dance composed of a few finger pointing movements, body waves and steps. Literal steps. Not the most exciting dance out there at the moment.

The song was amazing, but the music video and dance could have been loads better. 6/10

Wiggle Wiggle – Hello Venus

Hello Venus made their comeback with a new song, Wiggle Wiggle, being on the first bands to make their comeback for 2015. The song, along with the dance that accompanies it, has become a topic of discussion amongst fans and other listeners as well. They previously made their comeback with Sticky Sticky. It seems like they are taking the repetition seriously.

This song is surprisingly nice to listen to. However there were some major downfalls to the song. Firstly, the really high pitch singing. Really. This song had so much style and potential. However, instead the producers wrote the song with a really high pitch sound that make it unappealing. Imagine this song with vocals like in Sticky Sticky. To me it would have sounded a lot better. Secondly, that “screaming” as some people dub it. Yeah, it could have been better. It felt mismashed in this song, however at the same time it had its own style. The rapping was really good and I thought the chorus (minus the high pitch already pointed out) was pretty good as well. Overall, the song had so much potential. It just was lead in the wrong direction.

There is no music video. Sad, but there was no video that I could find. Except for the teaser.

Am I the first person to actually enjoy the twerking in this dance? Cause to me, it made sense. Cause I don’t think you can wiggle wiggle other parts of the body that well. Hahahaha… And this is basically another sexy concept done right for me. It makes sense to use it. Duh???

Disappointing that there was no music video. The song could have been way better, yet the dance was really awesome. 6.2/10

Catch Up Review #9 – AOA, Hello Venus, Zhou Mi (Super Junior M) – Celebrating 500 reviews…

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Finally getting to the end of these reviews.  Did you know that I am actually not writing them up and posting them straight away? I am currently on holidays…. But hey, at least I got these scheduled out over the time I am going. Just I expected these to be done by Wednesday night, and here I am on Thursday… But yeah, there are 11 of these catch up reviews, so two more to go. Let’s do this!!!

Like A Cat – AOA (THIS IS MY 500TH SONG REVIEW)

This is a recent song that came out last week. This song is a really catchy song and is basically a more fun version of their song that boosted them to popularity (Miniskirt). This is the song that I was waiting for. It is really upbeat and probably top all of their previous songs. I have one complaint, but Jimin’s introduction still sound whiny and her voices annoys me when I listen to the song. The music video is where the girls try to break into the vault to steal the diamonds. Firstly, the dude has too many tattoos. Secondly, some of the girl’s jobs are werid. Why is the girl in the air ducts playing phone games and manage to knock herself out with the gas? Why isn’t she crawling away? As for Jimin, she would have better off using a gun rather than the whip. The dance fitted the song title really well, and I actually like the dance. 8/10

Sticky Sticky – Hello Venus

This song was very boring. There is nothing appealing from the song. Well beside the cow bells. I don’t know why I am so drawn into the cow bells for? The bridge of the song, really did not fit in with the rest of the song. The music video was really boring. The dance was equally boring as well. I think Hello Venus needs to go back to their Venus or past concepts. They got popular using those concepts, so why change now? 0/10

Rewind – Zhou Mi (Super Junior M)

This probably has to be one of the catchiest songs of the 2014 year. “Stop, rewind, rewind” is the one line that is stuck in my head at this very moment. The chorus is pretty catchy. I prefer the Korean version over the Chinese version for this song. Mainly because Chanyeol’s rap suit the song more rather than Tao’s rap. There really is not much of a plot with the music video. Mainly of Zhou Mi remembering his lover. That or him being shirtless of the ending of the video. That probably got fan girls screaming or fainting. The dance was also pretty cool as well. The sharp movements and the “rewinding” motion fitted the song really well and made the dance pretty memorable in my head. 9/10

Next set of reviews are girls groups. Well, these were the girl groups that I promised that I would review such as Ladies Code, BESTie and Tiny G. See you next time!!! Let’s hope for another hundred review guys!!!!

What Are You Doing Today – Hello Venus

Source: http://d1i45kki000yqu.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/121412_hellovenus_what.jpg

After being noted as the female rookie group with the most potential to making it big in 2012, they have finally comeback with a new song released at the start of December (I think). This song still maintains the girl’s image as the cutey girl group that we are used to.

To be honest, I personally don’t think this is the right song for the girls. It does not have the same impact as Venus did. It does have a catchy beat, but at other times during the song, the song does not fit. The rap did not fit the song at all, and sounded really sudden. Then the song is relaunched to the chorus, but it does not move along well.  It does maintain the good enough image of the girls through their vocals, but it does not enhance the girls more. I think I feel this song kind of drags the girls back rather than put them up there with other singers. Compared to Venus, this song is not as addictive. It really does not show off the girls with their vocals, and the rap was not really top-notch.

As for the music video, I found the colour blue in the background as quite dull. This, for me, makes the whole music video as a dull thing to watch. Venus was bright and delightful, but now they came back with this song, I am quite surprised. The video actively fits the feel of the song and title of the song, where the girls are asking the guy about what he was doing today. However, with the dull nature of the song, this video was not for me. The thing I liked about in the music video was the picture frames. They looked quite vintage but nice. However, the video was not for me.

The dance was okay, but it was not quite catchy for me as the dance for Venus did. Also, I was quite bored of the performance. It really did not showcase any of the girl’s talent, which really made the performance quite boring to me.

3.5/10. Not the song, music video or performance for me. Maybe next time.

Venus – Hello Venus

Song

Is there a trend going on? You know with the Venus titles? Hello VENUS, VENUS by Shinwa & VENUS by Hello VENUS.

Well beside the title, I find this rookie group really good. They really have potential. It’s not one of those really cute songs that rookie girls sing when the first debut. This song actually sounds like an actual song that I would actually dance to. This group is really good. The vocals and the rap both sounds equally good.  Yes, that’s right, they have potential. Prepare 2NE1 for your competitors. The start of the song sounds good and is really catchy. I really like the prefer the “Hello” at the start and the chorus. “Yooooooouuuuu~“.

The only thing I just don’t like with the song is the “V.I.C.T.O.R.Y girls” part of the song, it just does not match the tone of the song as the song does not sound that mature.

Music Video

Okay, first things first. I find it very distracting that they are dancing in a really bright white room. It reflects back at you!!! MY EYES!!!!

I really like how straight forward the girls are to the guys in the video and I really like the concept of the party. It fits in well with the tone of the song, as it is light a fluffy. OH ITS SO FLUFFY!!!!

NU’EST is also in the video (for those who don’t know, they are the guys at the end in the pink jackets). Its great since both of them are in the same company and debuting just around the same time, so its great to see the two bands actually taking notice of each other.

Oh and those guys can dance. The chef and the two policemen at the end were hilarious.

Oh and another thing, the girls look adorable and cute.

Live Performance

The dance is quite catchy in the song. I really like the costumes, cause it brings out their light a fluffy personality. Beside that I think the whole performance was pretty good.

And The Rating?

I give the whole song, music video and performance a 9/10. Really great debut.

Have Fun Watching 😀 Troy.
