[Review] 20 Something – Jeong Sewoon

Personally, I think Jeong Sewoon is one of the best male soloists active at the moment. I have enjoyed the title tracks for his debut and 1st comeback, so I am interested in what type of music he going to release next. And today, he joins the Summer comeback rush with his comeback track, 20 Something which is produced by Melomance’s Jung Dong Hwan. The song is featured on Sewoon’s 3rd mini-album, Another.

The song has this particular vibe that I have grown to associate with Soyou’s work and collaboration with other artists. The harmonies and the very ‘traditional’ instrumental does feel that way. I say ‘traditional’ because it uses piano and drums, creating a very sombre atmosphere, whereas his previous songs have featured synths and feel more modernised. And with that, I imagine this song going nicely in Autumn environment, especially a walk in the park with leaves falling. I didn’t necessarily get a Summer’s vibe which I thought was interesting. I wasn’t a fan of the ending as this is probably the most absurd of all abrupt endings. I did really like the instrumental break, where his vocals contribute to the instrumental. I thought that section was really unique and memorable. His vocals were pretty good. Overall, I  liked the song but there were aspects that don’t feel that typical for a Summer’s release.

The video opens up with Sewoon checking into a hotel but then going for a movie, which I thought was rather confusing for a second. And it seems like he is watching a movie about himself travelling to different places around Europe. The video shows nice residential scenery. While the video does look really good, I think a more Autumn setting to would have been more fitting for the song. For example, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for the darken piano scenes which were shown during the instrumental break. I don’t know why it is darkened but it really does look cool (and I thought he was going with a dark concept for this comeback). But it was a nice and soothing video to watch.

[Review] Love It Live It – YDPP

Following the ending of Produce 101 Season 2, we have seen Wanna One and JBJ rise to success with their promotions. YDPP, despite just debuting today, is a group with 4-members who participated in the show. Jeong Sewoon, MXM (Lim Youngmin and Kim Donghyun) and Lee Kwanghyun have joined forces for this collaboration. YDPP stands for Youth, Dream, Passion and Purity and each member brings one of these aspects to the group.

Love It Live It is a funky song. I particularly like the instrumental of the track as it has character and colour, which makes it bright and extremely cheerful. Especially in moments where there were no vocals, there was this distinct sound which I don’t know who to describe. But it made me fall in love with it. The vocal work by each member was awesome and the rap sequence was also quite good. The hook wasn’t as strong as I hoped it for, so I haven’t found the track that catchy (yet). However, as I mentioned previously I keep on coming back for the instrumental. And while you thought the song ended quite quickly (since the final chorus kicked in around the 2:45 mark), there was an extra burst of energy at the very end for the high note and an extension of the song. It gives the song a uniqueness factor and it also manages to change up the song through the instrumental, which for this one time, I thought was cool.

The music video was a CF for Pepsi-Cola, wasn’t it? I tend to stay away from commercial based songs, only reviewing one or two of them in the past. This video just didn’t seem to be like a CF until the very end when the product placement was extremely strong. But then I went back and found the product placement to be everywhere (from the clothing the actress was wearing to the white and blue outfits the member were wearing). I really liked the colours the set was displaying and thought it matched the colourful nature of the song quite nicely.

The choreography was quite cool. It just felt like your normal choreography routine well suited for a pop song. I really like the ending, though, with the extra burst of energy at the end. With the kicks towards the middle, I thought that was cool (for some odd reason).

[Review] Baby It’s U – Jung Sewoon

Jung Sewoon has made his first comeback since his debut last year with Baby It’s U and his second mini-album, Part: 2 After. A few months ago, Jung Sewoon debuted with Just U, after participating in Produce 101 Season 2 and finishing in 12th position.

Baby It’s U is described as a ballad but mixed with the EDM style of music. And while it does use two different extremes of music, the song works surprisingly well. It isn’t the first ballad/electronic mix that has been attempted but it is the first one in a very long time. That being said, don’t expect anything hard-hitting because it features EDM. It started off as an acoustic track but it soon progressed into a song that featured a softer form of EDM. The instrumental is quite balanced and very calming, which is something that I really like about this song. It allows his vocals to be at the forefront of the song, which something that I have grown to love since his debut track. I find the song quite catchy and addictive, so I am sure it will be another chart-topper like Just U was, on my Weekly Music Charts. Overall, the track is quite upbeat, fresh and definitely something I will be coming back to.

The music video feels more suited for that period leading into the Summer season. It is something that I am definitely noticing with many comebacks featuring that Summer feel in this videos (or songs) despite it is Winter in South Korea.  The video is made up of Sewoon walking around and enjoying great scenery. It definitely makes for a nice video to watch, with great cinematography. He does find a cylinder cypher, which he solves during the video (and this also made up the teasers for his comeback), which makes sense since he is singing about solving the puzzle to his lover’s heart. Overall, it is a good video complimenting well with the song.

The performance is quite nice. It isn’t anything impressive but it does a good job fitting in with both the ballad (i.e. the slower walking bits at the start) with the more upbeat moves during the chorus (and hence fitting in nicely with EDM side of the song).

[Review] Just U – Jung Sewoon

Another trainee from Produce 101 Season 2 has finally made their debut. Jung Sewoon may have just missed out on making it into Wanna One, but his solo debut has already hit the top of the charts. The solo act is signed under Starship Entertainment and made his debut in the past week with Just U.

Just U is one damn good song. Not exactly sure how to describe it but smooth RnB jumps to my mind. The song opens up with an acoustic guitar as the main instrument and it remains as the dominant instrument throughout the entire song. It gives a Latin influence to the sound of the song. The rap verse is the only part that doesn’t have the guitar but I honestly didn’t notice until I started to write this review. His rap verse was quite good. But the standout has to be his singing. That smoothness that I mentioned at the start comes from the vocals itself. They also drew my attention to the song and its combination with the guitar makes it sound so much better. The chorus itself is also quite catchy and sounds so good every single time I listen to it. This is just a debut song and he has already nailed it. I can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us in the future.

The music video is a tad dry in my opinion. It just didn’t pull my attention as the song did. I did like certain parts of the video. For example, I liked the way he interacted with the camera on the tennis court. And the transitions were pretty good. There was also a very stylish factor about the video which I thought was nice. Everything else just felt ordinary.

The performance was okay. He had a few dance moves in there but I felt the microphone stand made it feel constricting and took the appeal out of it. As the guitar, I don’t understand the purpose of it if he only used it for less than 30 seconds.

Song – 9.5/10

Performance – 7/10
