[Review] April Story – April

April has also returned with a slight adjustment to their lineup. They last promoted as a 5 member girl group back in April 2016 with Tinkerbell. Hyunjoo was put on hiatus due to health issues and later in 2016, she ended up leaving the group. In her stead, Chaekyung and Rachel were added to the group, transforming the group into a 6 member girl group. They released their 3rd mini album Prelude and title track April Story on the 4th of January this year.

Another great song. This time April has gone with a very nice orchestra instrumental (with the addition of guitar riffs throughout the song) and something that has a grander sound than anything they have released. The group also adopted a more mature sound with this comeback. Vocally, this song gives the girls a little boost in recognition. While there aren’t any high notes, like in their past songs, each member sounded amazing. Well, for the 3 members or so who sung. I watched those line distribution videos once again. And this song probably was the worst line distribution of all time. 1 member got 2 seconds worth of lines and another member got no lines whatsoever. Instead, the majority of the song was dominated by 2 vocalists, who took a combined 73% of the song (Line distribution as my source here). Now I am reading that some of the members may not be vocally equipped or fluent in the language. So why make them debut? It doesn’t make sense. But I guess that can be talk for another day. The song just felt a little underwhelming, if I was to say anything else. Minus the line distribution, I enjoyed the song a lot.

The music video was quite underwhelming as well. Let me start off by getting something off my chest: that hair needs to go. Now that has been recorded and published for the word to see, I can focus back on the review. The video shows the girls as dolls, who seem to be eying the guy. It seems like the girls like the guy and dream that one day they can walk into the door of the store for him to see (i.e. the ending). The plot was okay and quite innocent. Just the video felt dull and unappealing to watch. Maybe given their past videos, I expected something with a little more colour. But then again it is Winter, so the dull filter is in style. And here I am rambling.

The choreography was quite good for the song. It was quite elegant and very classy to watch these girls dance. The ending in the video seemed messy, so the expectation was the stage was going to have a messy ending. But on the stage, it was perfected and they all look in sync.

Rating – 6/10

[Review] Blah Blah – Kyuhyun (Super Junior)

Kyuhyun has returned with a new ballad. This is his third round of promotions as a solo artist. He has released mini-albums in both 2014 and 2015, with both becoming extremely successful. His latest release has 2 title tracks: Blah Blah and Still (which I will not be reviewing).

Blah Blah is the type of ballad that gets you swaying to the music. As soon as I play it, my head just starts swaying. That is a sign of a good ballad. Hahaha… Honestly, if the verses had a little something to make it interesting, I would have dug into this song a lot sooner. But as mentioned, the verses are quite plain and that gives the song a weak opening. But as the song proceeds to the chorus, Kyuhyun starts showing off his vocals and it sounds wonderful. I love how his voice starts off literally soft and then it increases in power and volume as the song goes on. The lyrics tell a story of nervousness in front of a lover when trying to confess. The use of “Blah Blah” as the title put me off, but overall, it made sense in terms of the lyrics.

Come watch an Asian guy get a hair cut and have his beard shaved. The majority of the video is essentially that. Kyuhyun gets a hair cut in slow-motion. While it is shot in slow-motion to match the speed of the song, it is incredibly boring to watch. The other parts of the video include flashbacks to Kyuhyun wanting to confess to his friend/crush (implied from the lyrics). Finally, the video shows a car crash, where Kyuhyun’s car is flipped. The video made it look like he was on his way to confess. That makes it a sad video to watch. The hair cutting scenes filled in the start but also added to the ‘getting ready’ for the night, which does make it sadder. The video was shot nicely and overall, was also nice to watch.

Rating – 8.5/10

[Double Review] Beside Me + Love Is – Davichi

The Queens of Ballads have finally graced the stage in 2016. Davichi has officially made their comeback with double title tracks. The first track is titled as Beside Me and the other one is Love Is.  It’s been a while since I last reviewed them. The have also changed companies moving from MBK Entertainment to CJ E&M.

I freaking love Davichi ballads. They always have this fresh feel. Both songs managed to have that fresh feel, yet at the same time had a different element that kept the songs unique. Beside Me appeals to me because, while it is a ballad, there is an element of catchiness. Haeri sings one particular section of the song, the chorus, which caught my ears as soon as I listened to it. For a ballad, it is damn catchy. That is my favourite part of the song. That being said, the rest of the song is equally amazing. You could literally feel the emotion poured into this song. The lyrics portray the heartbreak pretty well, but their vocals just add another level of depth to it. While you think the rollercoaster of emotion is over, Love Is just decides to come along and dumping a lot of feelings. This song is much slower, but there is probably 100 times more emotion in this song. The reason why I like this song is that there is a lot of elegance when they sing the song. Especially the chorus where they emphasis that one word (or syllable): mwo (뭐). It sounds amazing. Their vocals have never been a joke and this just proves that even more. I also love how the start has a really soft instrumental and it slowly builds up into a beautiful orchestra piece. The vocals start of loud, but not too loud. As the instrumental builds up, it gave me an impression that the vocals were fading and fitted snuggly into the song. By the end, there was that amazing balance that I seek in song and ballads (especially Davichi’s ballad) portray amazingly.

Beside Me is a very mysterious video and the concept is quite matching to the song. The girls are in this foggy forest, running around, looking for their ‘lost’ love. The girls sing about how he must have forgotten about them and how they will always be there for their lover. Them running around the forest, the hallway, desperately looking for their love in their long dresses made the video quite powerful and meaningful. While not running around, the close up shots were captured the beauty of the girls really nicely. Love Is stars Lee Jong Suk has the main character. This music video is amazing for a number of reason. Lee Jong Suk is an amazing actor and his acting in the video is perfection. We see LJS arrive at this home and he seems to reminisce about the old times. That’s because in the video, he returns to his family home for either’s his father’s funeral or death anniversary. The memories get a little too much and when he faces his dad, he is overcome with emotion, crying while bowing down to his father’s portrait. Amazing video. The emphasis on those everyday sounds like picking up the mail, flipping the picture, the raining coming down etc. gave off a surreal sense of reality and added some more of that level of emotion (mainly because Davichi’s vocals and LJS’s acting isn’t enough). Both are amazing videos.

I cannot differentiate the videos and songs. They are both pieces of perfection to my ears and eyes, just in their own way.

Beside Me – 10/10
Love Is – 10/10

[Rewind] June 2016

Welcome back to my rewind post, recapping important events in KPOP in the month of June 2016. Let’s just get stuck into it.

4Minute Disbands?

Probably something we have all heard already. But 4Minute has officially “disbanded” according to many news outlets. If you haven’t heard, 4Minute’s contract was up to renewal this month and all the members (besides Hyuna) decided to not resign and has since left Cube Entertainment. According to Cube, they are currently preparing Hyuna’s comeback. However, I have been reading somewhere that 4Minute has yet to disband and that they will just be under different companies. But to that point, I point out the many KPOP bands that did not “disband” but split up to different companies and who have not made a comeback since leaving their original company. Furthermore, the members seem to be more focused on individual work more than group work. Anyhow, like everyone else, I wish the girls best of luck in all future endeavours.

Yoochun’s alleged sexual abuse

Another piece of news that you guys most likely heard of is Yoochun’s ongoing sex scandal. 5 ladies have reported Yoochun to the authorities for alleged sexual abuse, in the bathroom in what I am reading as adult entertainment bars. The first victim reported to the police, however, retracted her statement. She has (just recently) refile her case against Yoochun. the four other alleged victims have also claimed similar stories to the first victim. The first victim has also underwear as submitted evidence, which police has confirmed that there is male DNA on it. That is currently being tested for Yoochun’s DNA. I am reading that some of his fan sites have decided to shut down due to this scandal. I feel like they might have acted a little too hastily since he is only accused of the crime. It isn’t proven yet. Once proven, then I, 100%,understand their intentions. We just don’t know the full story yet and what really happened. The question stand as “did he do it or not?” and that is what the police is trying to determine, not us, his fans or the netizens. And this morning, I have been reading that other popular male actors are being brought up in this scandal. Don’t know what to say, but this is getting bigger every day that goes by.

Top 5 June Songs

  1. Windy Day – Oh My Girl
  2. L.I.E – EXID
  3. Apple Pie – Fiestar
  4. Lucky One – EXO
  5. Stalker – UKISS

New Content

For those who don’t know, I have been releasing new content for this site. First off, I have published a few profiles of artists, which you can find in the menu bar on top of the page. I have been compiling these profiles for a few months now (it is a lot harder than you think) and have aimed for a July release. Thankfully, I published a few earlier than what I intended and I will continue releasing different profiles as they are completed.
Furthermore, I have decided to bring the charts back. They will be posted weekly on Sundays for the week that went just went by. For more information, you can check the menu tab dedicated to “Weekly KPOP Chart” that I have published. The first one will be published this coming Sunday (10th July) for the week 3rd July to 9th July.

[Rewind] April 2016 & May 2016

Yeah… I know May hasn’t ended yet, but to avoid posting another late ‘Rewind” post 3 weeks after the month finished, I have decided to April and May together. This one is going to be a little informal in terms of format for a few reasons that will appear apparent. And before we move on, just a little reminder that I will try to write and release reviews every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Okay, moving along:

Leaving the Group?

We became shocked with the disbandment (or what we dubbed at the disbandment) of Kara at the start of the year. However, it seems like certain groups are facing member line up changes after one of their members had decided to not resign with their company and have since departed ways with their respective groups. Former member of 2NE1, Minzy, and former member of Miss A, Jia, have both decided to leave their successful group and go onto their own paths.  Minzy will (hopefully) make her solo debut in the near future after confirmation came from her new company in which she signed. Jia was announced today that she would be leaving the band after her contract finished. Miss A and 2NE1 faced disbandment rumours from these two events, but both their companies have stated that is not the case. Not only girl groups are facing these changes, but A-Jax (if we all remember who they were) recently lost 3 members (Sungmin, Jaehyung and Jihu). But the list does not end there. Hyunseung departed from Beast, leaving the group with 5 members. It was kind of expected after the numerous articles and petitions asking for his removal. Hyunseung is expected to return as a solo artist in the near future and is still signed with Cube Entertainment. It is always disappointing to hear these news and it has obviously shocked the industry a lot. These members have been with their band since the beginning, so it is always hard for fans. Hopefully, there won’t be any more of this and I wish the former members luck in their future endeavours (because that is something we all should do and not call them selfish).

Descendant of the Sun

Now this is something we all have heard about. The drama has taken Asia by storm and has been proven to be highly successsful. It stars Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Ko, as the main characters. Before you all die from shock, I have yet to watch this drama. So, no spoilers. But I don’t actually have any plans to watch the drama. Because I am not one to enjoy romance and all this lovey dovey sh*t. I just don’t watch the genre (or any mainstream and popular dramas). I prefer the cringeworthy daily dramas. Now, why am I talking about this drama? Well, the OSTs for this drama has literally taken over the charts each time they were released. Not complaining here, but the songs were really good. Like, I really enjoy listening to them and this is probably the first time I have been impressed with the OST for a drama. Anyway, the OST contains songs from Davichi, Gummy, K.Will, Yoon Mi Rae, Chen, Punch, Mad Clown, Kim Na Young, Xiah, MC The Max, Lyn and SG Wannabe. In OST terms, this is pretty much the star studded red carpet. Each song released topped the charts instantaneously and I can see these artists winning the Best OST awards at the award ceremonies already. That is all I am reporting on… Hahaha…

Comebacks and Debuts

For the past two months, many artists have made their comeback and they include ): Block B, Seventeen, History, April, Twice, AOA, Akdong Musician, VIXX, Lovelyz, Up10Tion and so many more.

For debuts, NCT is the big debut for April.  I.O.I is probably the major debut for May. However, we have seen new soloists emerge in KPOP in the past two months. Notably, Jung Eunji from APINK, Woohyun from Infinite and Tiffany from SNSD had their respective solo debuts in the last two months.

Top 5 songs of April

As per normal, these are my top 5 songs of April:

  1. Pretty U – Seventeen
  2. Journey to Atlantis – Laboum
  3. Dynamite – VIXX
  4. Queen – History
  5. Toy – Block B

Top 5 songs of May

May hasn’t ended yet, but it is about to. I will add other May songs to the June list (when I get around to it).

0. Pretty U – Seventeen (I have to. I have been trialling charts and Seventeen has been popping up every single week as the top song for the week).
1. Good Luck – AOA
2. Save Me – BTS
3. Nodding Nodding – Woohyun (Infinite)
4. I Just Wanna Dance – Tiffany (SNSD)
5. Fire – BTS

This one was a long one and I tried to keep it short. I am really behind in reviews and will get them out slowly. It will take me some time to catch up. Bad news is that I have exams coming up and I am going to be slower. I will review every major release eventually, so give me some time. Enjoy the rest of May and see you tomorrow!!!

Rewind: March 2016

OMG. I am so delayed. This was meant to be out earlier in the month, and now look at the calendar, April is almost gone. I’m still tweaking this segment, but I don’t know if I should any thing or get rid of anything existing, so if you can provide feedback, it will be greatly appreciated. Lots to talk about, to let’s go.

Major News

EXO’s Kai and F(x)’s Krystal were caught dating and SM Entertainment confirmed that the two were in fact an actual couple. After this confirmation, people started to post pictures online as “proof of Kai and Krystal’s relationship”, which I think are either fake or just a blatant invasion of privacy (but what isn’t? They are watched 24/7). But some of these picture claims to have Kai and Krystal kissing in public in a pool and catch the two “checking in” into hotels. Anyway, while this probably heartbreaking to fans of both, we all should be happy for them. Oh and did I mention Dispatch was the one to tell the world about this couple (once again). Who are your reporters and why are they so good about finding these things?

And the industry has been rocked by news of certain singers suspected of being a part of prostitution, which involves dodgy sponsors. I am not in tune with the whole thing and I am quite sure that the news has died down now. It is very hard to retell everything here, so I will just cut to the chase. These singers either go or are introduced to these sponsors that will make an investment into the singers career, in exchange for you know what. That is my understanding of it, and these singers were caught. They were brought into questioning and the news (of course) leaked a description of a particular artist who recently left her company and faced financial hardship in the past. It is sad that people have to result to this (that is if they chose this path) or just horrible if they were tricked into it, which I believe of some of claim to have been.

Comebacks & Debuts

March saw big name bands make their comebacks. GOT7, Jun Hyosung (Secret), Lee Hi, Fiestar, Red Velvet, Hyomin (T-Ara),DAY6, BTOB, Oh My Girl and Eric Nam are just to name a few.

We cannot forget about the rookies can we? KNK made their debut with Knock, which it garnering a lot of interest in the band, and I am too.

Polls

A few polls (including the ones in Febuary as well). I asked you guys:

  • Which Winner song did you guys prefer? And the results is as follow: I’m Young (30%); Sentimental, Baby Baby & Pricked (20%); and finally Immature (10%).
  • Which Taemin song did you guys like? Both songs (Drip Drop and Press Your Number) received the same amount of votes.
  • Which Lee Hi song did you guys like? Hold My Hand had an overwhelming amount of votes (87%) and Breathe got 17% of the votes.

Top 5 Songs Of March 2016

Here are my top 5 songs that were released in March 2016, taken straight from the amount of plays in iTunes:

  1. Find Me – Jun Hyosung (Secret) ft. D.Action
  2. Fly – GOT7
  3. Mirror – Fiestar
  4. Spring Love – Eric Nam & Wendy (Red Velvet)
  5. Knock – KNK

As you can tell, review releases have decreased so much in the past month. I apologise. Just a heads up, I will be releasing reviews on Sundays Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays (provided I am free and have time on those days). The other days are far too too busy for me. I also mentioned on Twitter that once this semester ends, I will be doing a revamp of the site (much needed), so if there is anything you want to see, comment below. All feedback will be appreciated.

Rewind: February 2016

Welcome back to another monthly rewind. February is officially gone and it went super fast (despite it having an extra day, as this is a leap year). Before we all know it, March is gone and April passed us like the wind. Let’s get started shall we?

Major News

I think there are two major news that we need to cover. One that talks good about one band, and the other isn’t that good. But bad publicity is good publicity right?

GFriend made their comeback at the end of January 2016, but managed to sweep the charts with their newest mini album and title track, Rough. And when I mean “sweep the charts”, the girls stayed at the top  of the digital for over hundreds of hours, a proportion of those hundreds of hours were actually perfect all kills (which are apparently extremely hard to get, but the girls did it somehow). This led them to win their first music show trophy since debut and they managed to do pretty well. And when I mean pretty well: Triple Crown on Show Champion, MCountDown and Inkigayo, 4 trophies on Music Bank and 2 on SBS The Show. That is a lot. Their hard work has finally paid off, with the help of their fanclub and fans.

In other news, Beast is in the limelight for the wrong reasons. Hyunseung was caught falling asleep during an interview, which disappointed fans and garnered a lot of criticisms. Falling asleep in an interview seems a little too much my opinion, but it just shows how tired they artists are with multiple schedules in one day, concerts, comebacks, practice, interviews, the lot. Junhyung also saw some criticism when he failed to attend a fanmeet due to sickness, but somehow managed to attend his friend’s (Jung Joon Young) birthday party. While it was cleared up with Junhyung, Cube Entertainment and Jung Joon Young each making a statement saying how he came for only a few moments, just to drop off a present. Honestly, some people need to give these guys a break. Sometimes, you need to take a sickie (or sick day) just to go somewhere or to relax and take it slowly. So why are these people so annoyed with that, when they probably do it too, when everything becomes too overwhelming?

Major Comebacks

Number of groups made their comeback this month. 4Minute, Winner, Mamamoo, B.A.P, Taemin (SHINee), NU’EST, Rainbow (even though some are speculating this will be their final release) and many other smaller, rookie bands.

Major Debuts

Astro is the first group that comes to mind with their debut this month. Actually, it is probably the only group that debuted in February that I have reviewed thus far. Their title track is Hide & Seek.

AOA has been around since 2012, but they recently debuted a brand new subunit called AOA Cream. Odd name for a subunit though. Chanmi, Hyejeong and Yuna make up this group. They made their debut with I’m Jelly Baby.

Polls

I am skipping polls this month as I am a little busy. I will be able to write about one of the polls that I have made in next month’s review.

Top 5 Songs of The Month

  1. You’re The Best – Mamamoo (reviewing coming soon)
  2. Feel So Good – B.A.P
  3. Whoo – Rainbow
  4. Hate – 4Minute
  5. Galaxy – Ladies Code

Just a small note: I have started university again, so the rate at which reviews come out will decrease dramatically. And I have to go in everyday, so it is going to be hard to make some time.

Rewind: January 2016

2016 has started and we are already one month into the year. Damn time flies. And by the time you are reading this, we already be 1 and a half month in. Is that Christmas bells I hear in the far distant? Hahahaha… This is my revamped Rewind post for the month of January of the year 2016. Let’s go!

Major News

Probably the biggest news of the month is in regards to Tyuzu’s controversy in China. Now, while most of this is political, here is just a brief run down of what I know is going on. Tyuzu was seen on a broadcast holding a Taiwan flag and saying proudly that she is Taiwanese. China (and I say its people) did not like the idea and decided to censor her. She issued an apology, but some people think JYP forced her to do so, as now all his artists (GOT7 and 2PM were reported in the news) have been “shut out the country”. It has gone far as Twice’s stage being left out of the Golden Disk Awards when it was broadcast live in China, which for who do not know, is a Korean award show that was supposed to be held in China, but due to certain circumstances was moved back to South Korea.  All I have to say is that she is probably now scarred for life. Everyone always talk about equality and to be proud of who you are. And sadly this is a reflection of how hypocritical the world is.

Major Comebacks

GFriend made their slaying comeback in January with Rough and have since been stealing all the music show’s trophies this week (which happens to be February, but since they officially made their comeback stages in January…). They have proven to be a powerful force and given that they only made their debut last year, makes this an amazing feat. Congrats 여자친구.

Other artists that made their comeback in January are: Teen Top, Dal Shabet, Zico (Block B), Stellar, Cross Gene , The Legend, Shin Hye Sung (Shinhwa) and many other artists.

Major Debuts

Ryeowook from Super Junior made his official solo debut this past month (28th of January) with The Little Prince, a ballad. While quite popular, he is currently competing with GFriend on the music shows and unfortunately been placing second.

IMFACT is also another rookie group that made their debut on the 27th of January. Their song, Lollipop, is currently one of my most played songs and I am actually listening to this song while I am writing this. Hahaha..

Other debuts in the past month include: Yezi (Fiestar), SUS4, & CocoSori

Polls

I did ask you all which iKON song you guys liked the most since their debut. The results are in and the most liked iKON song is: Airplane and Dumb & Dumber. Both scored 25% of the votes. My Type, Rhythm Ta, Anthem and Apology all scored 13%. What’s Wrong did not receive any votes.

Top 5 Songs for the Month!

  1. Rough – GFriend
  2. Lollipop – IMFACT
  3. Someone Like U – Dal Shabet
  4. Don’t Forget – Crush ft. Taeyeon (SNSD)
  5. Warning Sign – Teen Top

And that is it for the January of 2016. February’s rewind is going to be a long one with all these confirmed comebacks.

Rewind: December 2015

I feel like I have done too many of theses for December. Hahahaha… To avoid repeating the end of year charts, here is my pick for the top 10 songs that were released in December. Unfortunately, I left out a number of songs in the November rewind post, and I have forgotten where I put my list when I made it last month. (Might have thrown it out with the rest of the recycling). 3. Run Away – Royal Pirates

4. Sing For You – EXO

That is my final rewind for 2015. Stayed tuned for the 1st rewind for 2016. I think I am going to revamp this rewind segment (again) to make it more like a throwback to the month that just passed. Any ideas? Comment below! In the mean time, check out these reviews.

Rewind: September 2015

This is once again overdue. But don’t you worry. I have September and October’s rewind coming out on the same day. So to check out my personal list of favourite songs for October, there should be an arrow, pointing to the right, on the top of the page under the title to this post that says “Rewind: October 2015”. Click and yeah. Very anti-climatic. BUT what were you favourite songs of the 9th month of the year? Comment down below!!

[NOTE: These lists or charts are done after I write the review. And I have a confession to make, I tend to find some songs a lot more catchier and end up liking to them AFTER I review them. So the reviews and this chart probably won’t go hand in hand! But that occurs for only some songs, not all.]

[PLAYLIST COMING SOON]

A while back, I did post a poll which I did promise I would announce more official results. Here we go!!!

  • I asked you, “Which Big Bang song from the month of May did you like more?”. 60% of the voters put Bang Bang Bang as their choice, compared to the 33% result released back in July. 40% preferred We Like 2 Party, compared to the 66% back in July. What a change of events!
  • Also, I asked you the exact same question for the month of June. Sober was much preferred with 67% of the results, while If You had 33% of people backing it.

See you for the Rewind: August 2015 post (which happens to be coming up in just a few days). In the mean time, check out these reviews that many people have been viewing:

  • I also asked you which Big Bang song you guys preferred. Though it seems mean that I am posting the results now, I think I should leave the poll open until the July rewind post for fairness. After all I did post the poll in the last few days of June. 66% of people preferred We Like 2 Party and 33% liked Big Bang. But don’t you worry, vote below and the OFFICAL results will be posted in the next rewind

Rewind: May 2015

Hi guys. Now, I have been doing these rewinds for 4 months now and they have been focused a lot on the news rather than the songs that were released in the month. So this month, I am going to go through my favourite songs. 20 of them. Just for you. Why 20? Well, 10 songs seem too short for me. And I often find one or two songs that isn’t mainstream KPOP that I really enjoy. It might be an OST of a drama or just a random song that needs some recognition.

The first video of the playlist corresponds to the 1st song on my list of favourite songs for May. Yeah, it is long overdue. BUT I insist you skip the first few videos, because there are some hidden gems towards the end. Some of these songs I wanted to push up higher, but since I really did not listen to them as much, I couldn’t compared to like the first song.

  • Kim Sung Gyu has 4 songs on this list. Mainly because every song on his mini album was amazing. I actually wanted to add his intro track, but that would have been excessive. By far on the best albums.
  • Other artists that I honestly have never heard of until I listened to them was: Chaebol & Associates, Bear Planet, Welldone Potato (the names are getting to me).
  • Debut tracks were also on there. More than I expected. Watch the playlist above. Only a few more days until the June comes out, so be prepared.

In May, I put in some polls for you to see which song or music video was better:

  • I asked you, which Big Bang song you guys preferred. Loser came in first with 71.43% and Bae Bae came in second (last, in other words) 28.57%
  • I asked you which BTS music video you guys preferred and 100% of the votes went to the 19+ version. Well, I was expecting that, since the editing for the 15+ version did not make any sense.
  • Finally, I asked you which song Kim Sung Gyu released was your favourite. Both Kontrol and The Answer were tied. Well, given the standard of the songs, I am not surprised.
