Catch Up Review #13 – MYNAME, History, SPEED

Another catch up review. Was supposed to be up a few days ago, but I may have been a little too busy. But with some time now, I shall review the songs for you. If you cannot tell right now, boy groups are up in the spotlight this time around. Today, MYNAME’s Just Tell Me, History’s Must Just Die and SPEED’s recent release What U? will be reviewed for you guys. I was planning on review UNIQ’s EOEO, but one things led to another and SPEED was put up instead.

Just Tell Me – MYNAME

mnjtme

This song was really meh to me. It ticked the right boxes for a modern song and kind of continues on with their mini album they released at the start of the year with Too Very So Much. The song was just so boring. I listened to it once, and haven’t really looked back on it at all. It is somewhat catchy but overall there is no appeal to the sing. The rapping feels very dramatic here as if they are trying hard. As for the vocals, I was fine with it. The music video had this club feel to it and more of a “sexy” concept with the feeling. But the choreography made it feel to distant from the concept and I was very confused. The plot line of the music video was very serious and sexy. But the dance was a little more carefree and playful. So that disappointed me quite a bit. There was so much potential with the music video, but the dance really did not suit it. But the dance did suit the song, so I guess it is just a mismatch between the song and music video then. 3/10

Might Just Die – History

hismjd

Finally, a modern day orchestra. Wow, I was so amazed when I heard this song. I was not disappointed with it whatsoever. The song just punched me in the face. Maybe they did go a little overboard with the dubstep sounds in the song, but I thought that it complimented the orchestra so well. As for the vocals and the rapping, I was cool with it. The first rapping verse though was a little unsettling as it just changed the song up entirely for me. But beside it, I thought it was a solid song. As for the music video, their acting is pretty good. It seems like they were locked away and when they were released by the girl, things got a little out of hand and they made a mistake that drove the girl away. So I guess this where the “Must Just Die” title came from, as they might as well die if the girl is not there. As for the dance, I thought it was pretty good. Those abs are very defined. Probably so many fan girls swooned over them abs. I like the dance towards the end more than the rest of it but overall, the entire dance fitted very well with the modern song. 8.5/10

What U – SPEED

watuspeed

As again, I thought this was an amazing song. The orchestra is there once again but with more of the epic and grand feel for this song. the vocal work was really well done especially the ad-libs at the end. The title was really off putting for me though. What U what? It is a little disappointing to here Taewoon had left the band and the rapping just did not feel like normal. But you can tell that Sungmin and Sejoon tried very hard to fill in Taewoon’s position as well. The music video was a little boring to watch though, I have to be honest. So much more could have been done with it and I was just do bored of it. There was a plot line to it, but it just felt so empty that I am kind of glossing over it. From what I got out of it, the boys follow this girl. And she is very terrified. And I would be as well, mainly because they are all creeping her out at the end. Unless you are a hardcore fan. Then they should be scared of you. Hahahaha… The dancing concept was amazing. They brought tutting into KPOP a few years back and now they are coming in with Heely shoes. I have no idea what they are called, but apparently they used to be popular. Yeah, they existed for a very long time and I only heard of them now. Well, I knew they existed. But the dance is amazing with it in. More complex and I just can’t wait for someone to stack it. Too evil? Yeah, I think so too as well. MUAHAHAHA…. 8/10

Wow, I wrote more as I went by. Click on the song title’s for the music video. The next two reviews will be the more standard ones with just one song. I plan to review both SHINee’s View and Kara’s Cupid. They should be out tomorrow and Saturday, so just a little more waiting.

너무 Very 막 – MYNAME

For the first time ever, I have put Korean hangul in the title of this review. I know right, such a big milestone. 너무 Very 막 is a brand new song released by the band MYNAME just last week. It translates roughly to “too very so MUCH”. As you can see, the title is really nothing to be proud of. They made their last comeback with Day By Day back in 2013, and later went on to release their first (?) Japanese album with the single of F.F.Y in 2014 (which also won Best Japanese Song for 2014. You can check out the other awards HERE!).

Hmmm.. There is this common trend going through many KPOP songs at the moment. They take 2 or more genres and smash them up into one song. It could be a ridiculously mess or an amazing sounding song that blows your mind. To me this song, it is a mixture of both. Parts of this song don’t really match up and it feels disconnected. But as a whole, the song was actually a whole song, so I really could not decide whether it was entirely bad or good. It has a hip hop feel to it, but then the song cut to a very slow instrumental and it got me cringing. I have to be honest, the song is pretty catchy and I guess that is why I keep going back to the song. Their rapping and vocals have been improving and it is kind of hard that a few years back they were doing ballad type songs.

The music video was not funny. People said that they were laughing throughout and my initial thoughts were “really?”. I understand that the music video was meant to be humorous, but just watching it got me confused. I really don’t know sometimes the point of Korean comedy. Sometimes it is funny, sometimes it just makes them look really stupid. Maybe I was born in the era of stand up comedy and am really just used to people standing up and telling jokes rather than acting them out. Like the ambulance scene. A saw and a jack-hammer was used to “operate” on the dude. Actually, the whole ambulance crew rocked up as if they were going to a construction site. And then they cut to something like a limbo scene (which I kind of get, just don’t know why the ambulance men would be there). And then they cut to some factory that produces brains. The they attempt to catch the girl that they have fallen for? You see, none of this make sense. And I am really disappointed about that. (And I am very disappointed in my grammar in this paragraph.)’

Dance was pretty cool. That word they keep on repeating in the song (mainly by the rapper and that chipmunk voice) means headache, and I just love it how they have a dance move that kind of represents you hitting your head during a headache. The dance overall was lively and happy.

Song was okay. Music video was terrible. Dance was pretty good. 4/10

Best Of The Best 2014 – Winners

Announcing the winners of the 2014 Best Of The Best. Click here for the full list of nominees!!!

Code: RED FONT – WINNERS BLUE FONT – HONOURABLE MENTION

BEST ROOKIE GROUP

2014, like the past few years, have seen so many new KPOP bands debut. So many new bands, so much that I have a really difficult job to select certain artists and also keep up with the old styles. 2014 saw the big 3 companies debut their own groups, but I have to be honest, the stand outs came mostly from the smaller companies. One group in particular stood out from the rest: Mamamoo. Harmony and totally different style from what we are used to. Honourable mentions go to GOT7.

BEST INSTRUMENTAL

The one song that is overlooked by everyone on the album is the instrumental. I freaking love instrumentals, and this year, KPOP decided to tease me with so many new instrumentals. That being said, this year the winner of Best Instrumental is Ain’t Nobody by Ye-Eun (Ha:tFelt). Honourable mentions go to Sugar Free by T-Ara.

BEST VOCALS

KPOP = Singing. There for it is only right for this year to have an award for Best Vocals, right? Well, the winner goes to Ha:tfelt – Ye Eun (Wonder Girls). I was so amazed by here singing this year that it blew my mind, particularly her title track Ain’t Nobody. Honourable mentions go to IU (yes, I think most of us agree).

BEST RAPPER

Many KPOP songs have many rapping parts. At the same time, rappers need some recognition. Though, I feel my choice this year could be a little odd, only one person (in my opinion) did a really amazing job. Junhyung from Beast did a wonderful job in Good Luck, 12:30 and the many songs he featured in. Zico from Block B takes Honourable Mentions.

BEST SUBUNIT

Since 2013, many subunits have been on trend. Even though subunits have been losing trend, many bands this year debuted their own subunits. However, I think we should move away from the new subunits. Cause this year an old subunit wins. Orange Caramel steals Best Subunit with release of three different songs. Honourable mentions goes to Rainbow Blaxx.

BEST COLLABORATION

The new trend for 2014. Collaborations between artists have been on the rise. This year though, if you were a KPOP fan for a while, you would know already who the winner is. Soyu & JungGiGo’s Some steals the show, topping the end of year charts conducted in South Korea and winning Best Song as well on the SBS Music Festival. Well of course they would win, considering that they SLAYED the charts. Honourable Mentions go to Sane and Raina’s collaboration, Midsummer Night’s Sweetness.

RISING STAR OF THE YEAR

This year there has been so many stars that have started to become more popular. The nominees tend to be bands that have debuted in the previous year, and with help of comebacks, started to become well known in the industry. I think for the first time ever, I am going to be honest and put forward two winners to this category. First of all, BTS say a boost in popularity and have become a band that I look forward to listening to. Second of all AOA saw new popularity with release of Miniskirt, Short Air and Like A Cat. Both bands, obviously, rose a lot this year and I found it hard to differentiate them.

BEST JAPANESE SONG

If you don’t know (I won’t be surprised) I also review some Japanese song. 2015 will be the year where I start to review more Japanese songs for you all. However, 2014 also had a lot of catchy and cool Japanese songs. The winner for this year is Korean boy band MYNAME’s F.F.Y. Such a catchy song. As for honourable mentions, it goes to AAA’s Showtime.

BEST DANCE

KPOP is also known for its dancing. 2014 saw some interesting dances, catchy dances, and some dances that have no words to describe it. And that can be a good thing or a bad thing. This year, T-ara took the position as best dance. It was probably the most addictive dance and it was pretty easy as well. It matched the song and most importantly, I loved it. Honourable mentions to Infinite’s Back.

BEST ALBUM

A brand new category for 2014. Every award show or some kind of award giving platform has the “best album” award. And yes, this year, there are so many freaking great albums (like any other year). In my opinion, the best album of the year goes to F(x)’s Red Light. All, if not most, of the songs were amazing to listen to and were so great. Every freaking song was different, and though that maybe risky, F(x) pulled it off as a flowing album. Honourable Mentions goes to AKMU’s Play.

BEST MALE SOLOIST

Solos don’t tend to be the trend this year. Some bands saw new members branch into a solo career, however it seems like more and more KPOP idols (whether male or female) are branching out to acting or variety shows. However, the winner to this category is a person who started offically his own solo career with a lot of experience in the music industry. Crush is the winner. Damn, this dude’s songs are so good. You should check them out. Honourable mentions: JungGiGo.

BEST FEMALE SOLOIST

It seems like more and more females are branching out onto the stage. We saw many KPOP divas making their solo debuts on the stage with new and fresh songs from bands like T-Ara or Secret. We already have divas who have accomplished a start to their solo career and saw comebacks of very big names. This year, one solo stood out and that is Secret’s Song Ji Eun. Releasing her first solo mini album, she did quite well considering the competition she was going through. Honourable Mentions goes to Sunmi.

BEST FEMALE GROUP

Sexy concept by girl groups have been on the rise. If you know me well, then you probably already know my pick. However, so many girls groups made their comeback this year. Some picked up a lot of popularity and saw massive wins for the first time. Girl’s Day hitted big with their amazing single Something. They later went on to release Darling and I Miss You. Being one of the biggest girl groups of the year, they were sure to pick some prize up. APINK steals honourable mentions this year with their massive single Mr Chu and their latest hit Luv, which blew up and swept all the December trophies for 2014.

BEST MALE GROUP

There have always been a large influx of boy groups and this year it is no different. I was so impressed I was just going to choose all 10 nominees as winners. However, there can only be one winner (well, technically), so I guess I have to choose one. I am going to put down VIXX. They released Eternity and Error this year and both songs were hits for the band. Not only that, they displayed great dance moves and skills. Beast takes out honourable mentions with Good Luck and 12:30, both being very great songs that also delivered like what VIXX had to show. (Just VIXX nudged a head a little bit).

BEST MUSIC VIDEO

This year, most of my Best Music Video Nominees saw the depressing side of KPOP. 8 music videos had this sad or dark storyline to tell. 2 music videos were made in a soft hearted and were really cheerful. G.o.D’s music video for The Story Of Our Lives, told the amazing bond between family and that the outside will never be able to define the inside. Megan Lee features in the song and both band and soloist did an amazing job singing and pouring out their emotions. By the way, SM made a video outside of the box. F(x)’s Red Light, takes honourable mention.

BEST SONG

25 songs were nominated for Best Song for 2014. All were to an excellent standard. There were clear stands out. Something by Girl’s Day, EXID’s Up and Down and Beast’s Good Luck are this year’s honourable mentions. However, which song took Best Song category for 2014? Check the song and music video down below.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM KPOPreviewed!!!

Day By Day – MYNAME ft. D.O

Source: http://www.kpopmagazin.de/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/105833-myname-to-make-comeback-on-october-11-with-day-by-day.jpg

MYNAME recently made their comeback with another song this year, being their third song already. MYNAME has opted for a more mature and more softer look this time around, giving up that cool and extreme choreography that they have built for their name. This time around though, they enlisted the help of D.O, a rapper, not the D.O most of us are familiar about. It was like that Suho guy, who got mistaken for Suho. That was rude of me. MYNAME comes out with really great songs, this being one of them.  Oh also, they are making their Japanese comeback, literally right after prompting this song, which is quite scary.

The song has that really sad and depressing Autumn feel to it, where every other Autumn song has the same feel. The song is quite warming and different to many over songs in the industry at the moment. I have to praise the rapper, D.O. His rapping voice fits the song really well. Even though it is autotuned, like the chorus in this, it sounds really cool, giving it that modern feel to it. The band seemed to have focused more on the vocal side this time around, not focusing much on the instrumental. The chorus is pretty catchy, after listening to the song, I can still hear “Oh Day By Day“. The really soft instrumental sound really good with the guitar and use of the drums. This is sounds like your typical song, it starts off slow and then reaches the climax, and then eases off to the end.

This music video is awesome!!!!! I love the different effects of this music video. Where the use of the one member in like 4 different positions in one frame. Basically a really unique video. I love how the camera moves from left to right and the member which is the camera has focused on would walk and fade in and out of the music video. I just want to know how many takes this video took, because to make something like that for approximately 4 minutes must have taken a lot of effort. And also the editing! Okay, my geek fest is over. I really liked it how they used the same set throughout the video, but basically made it like a large circle. I guess the highlight for this comeback is the music video and the use of the fading effect. Hahahaha… But really unique video.

The dance is great as well. Maybe I think the guys took it down a little too much, but the dance matches the softness of the song really well. There are no sharp movements or jagged parts to the video that you would expect in a more poppish song. The dance is smooth and passionate.

8/10. Pretty cool comeback. Softer than usual but equally as effective.

Baby I’m Sorry – MYNAME

Source: http://www.soompi.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/myname.png

MYNAME recently made their comeback with their latest song, Baby I’m Sorry. The song was released on July 4th and their music video has since been an instant hit. Because of the that, the music video section of this review is larger than ever, and the intro, song part and dance will be shortened.

The piano instrumental at the start is very soothing. As the song progresses we hear the song build up in power, and is released at the end really well. The raps and vocals are very powerful. My most favourite parts the vocal parts just before the chorus, by Insoo. Also, Insoo seems to dominate most of the song, which is a change considering that Seyong and Gunwoo had dominated most of the others songs they released in the past. The song itself is about how willing a guy is able to let go of a girl because of the things he has done. However if you pair it up  the video, the song can be seen as something else.

In the music video we can see: a group of friends are having fun on the beach, when the fifth friend comes back without beer (underage drinking, much?) with a bloodied face. The other friends go back and attack the gang who attacked their friend. In the present day, we see the group still best of buddies, however, their leader (Gunwoo)went into the gang business, much to his friends’ disapproval, while the others too are living their normal lives. The leader is recruited into one of the biggest gang in the area. The rivalry between the gangs are so large, that the boss guy orders Gunwoo to attack, but not kill the other gang leader. Insoo, one of the friends, sees and tells the others.  The “attacked” leader hires one of the other friends, Seyong to protect him and fight back.  Both cross paths, and obviously Seyong is angry at Gunwoo for going down that specific path. Seyong is bribed into killing Gunwoo’s gang leader, but does not successfully completes the mission and is killed in the act. Gunwoo comes back to see a body being dragged out. He also texted his dead friend about the past and how he misses it but is told by one of his friends that his boss killed Seyong. Gunwoo goes back for revenge with the other members as well, but all died in the end. Gunwoo is bashed, but shot to death by the gang leader. One guy ends up saving his friend, but dies in the process, while the other is also killed. The weakest person tries his best to defend himself but his fear takes over him, killing him as well. We then realize that the leaders collaborated with each other to kill all the friends.

I may be bias when I say this, but there seems to be more to meets the eye. We can see throughout the whole video that the last member to die was pretty useless right? Well, no. It is definitely worth something when he is the last of the five to survive the whole ordeal. I am the weakest person of my friend/group, in terms of physical abilities and I can relate to this video. We see him struggling in his last final moments to get help, but indeeds fail. I see this as all the members can be depended on. The stupid one, the smart one, the strong one or the weak one, all have their place in the group. I think the music video focuses on the friendship aspect of the group rather than the gang life or the actual violence in the video. It is a really well done video and seriously, a movie must be made of this.

The dance is pretty intense and hard to follow. However it still looks pretty cool and really “up there” in terms of standard. The dance seems to fit the power of the song and its seriousness.

10/10. Really, best song, video and dance by the group to date. AMAZING.

Just That Little Thing – MYNAME

Source: http://www.mtvk.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/MYNAME-Just-That-Little-Thing-Teaser-2.jpg

MYNAME recently made their comeback with Just That Little Thing. Off the bat, it took me a few times to quite understand the title. I read many times in my head and just could not understand it. When I got it, I was quite happy and proud of myself, until I saw the music video. Yeah, sad isn’t. I am so sorry, if this review is so awkward. This is my first review in like 3 weeks. Yeah, I took a break. NOTE: This was written on the 15th of February  yet it will be published on the 8ish of March.

Let’s just say that song was okay. At first I liked it, but then I was like not for me. Then I liked it again, and then I thought to myself: No. To be honest, I find this song lacking. Vocals were okay and the rap was too. When you first hear the song, it is like some kind of like club song that was mashed up with a sad, romantic ballad. Yeah, that is something that won’t mix and probably will never mix. The chorus starts to pick up, which made the song much better if it remained at a slowed pace. I really like the sound of the end of the chorus. It is like when I write essays, and cannot finish my conclusion, so you will write anything to finish the piece. Here, for this song, it really fits. I have to admit, the vocals always improve when the boys come out with a new song. But then again, the song was not ideal. I mean, pick whether you want a love song or a club themed song. It is not hard. The rap did fit the melody of the song, but not the actually pace of the song. That “Rawr” from the rapper, is really out of place in the whole song and was kind of a major let down for me.

The music video was quite confusing. It seems that it got in the way of me understanding the song. It is arty, but to me it is boring. From he outside, it a a guy who has not stepped into this room for a very long time, so he decides to go around the room looking for things, and on the way discover things that belonged to his former girlfriend. They proceed to cry on the couch which has been conveniently covered for the next scene. Everything starts to explode. Like, where on the earth did the director think of this? “Oh, lets add the slo motion camera and put bombs everywhere in the room to make the music video look good.” It just does not reflect the song at all. Overall, a disappointment.

As for the dance. Wow. I really liked the dance. The flying kicks in mid air were really unique and really sets the group apart from other KPOP groups. The punch at the end of the song is so in sync, I had to replay it a few times to see if the group or a member was a fraction too late. All of the dance moves were all in sync, actually and timing with the song were really good.

So much for my 400 word max. word limit. Anyway, I would give this a 5. It would’ve have been lower, if it was not for the dance, but overall, I was quite confused with where I felt with the song.

Hello & Goodbye – MYNAME

Song

Even though they are a rookie group, I really like them. I loved their song Message and now this song has infiltrated my mind. Hello & Goodbye has this really addictive ring especially where they sing “Hello & Goodbye“. I found this to be quite addictive, as every time I come across the words Hello and Goodbye in my life those two words ring in my head, the exact same way as they had sung it. I really like the calmness of the song, as the lyrics down sound quite powerful, which is kind of different. I also like how they keep all their energy in and release towards the end, as it is quite unique. I like how the rap is not as fast paced as other raps, but not as slow as if you think the rapper is actually talking to you. The vocals were quite good. I was impressed with the long, high note at the end.

Music Video

Now this is interesting. The guy I am assuming is a part of the Mafia or something similar. He meets the Mafia boss’ daughter or girlfriend. Both develop a crush over each other. The girl asks the guy for a dance, which the Mafia guy lets. When she wants to go public about their relationship, the Mafia guy gets jealous and kidnaps the girl. The guy then fights for the girl, but then the girl dies. The guy also gets shot by the Mafia leader, which should kill him.

Now I don’t get why the Mafia guy got jealous. He gave the girl away to the lead. Is he really that jealous? Is he really that stupid to “lend” a girl to another guy and then become jealous in like less than a day? Really stupid leader.

I did like the violin segment towards of the music video, because it made it more dramatic.

Live Performance

I liked the dance, but at the same time felt it was unappealing. It matched the beat, but really did not portray the same amount of emotion as like the music video did.

And The Rating?

I’d give it a 7.5/10. Really good song. and alright music video and performances.

Have Fun Watching. Troy 😀

Message – MYNAME

Song

Woah, was I blown away with this song? Yes. This has to be one of the best songs sang this year for a debut single. It is very professional. At first this song was really weird for me cause this song was about a message and sounded a lot like a EPIC FAIL song (Facebook Official). However it grew on me and now I like it. I would categorize this as an electopop song cause of its electric beat and tune. The chorus here is really good. Very catchy. Also the start of the song which was like “Yololololol. OhOhOhOhOh.” was really good.

English

Now there really isn’t much English in this song, just the odd few lines. However, they pronounce Message differently to us. They pronounced as “Mess-i-gee”.

MV

ARGHHHH!!!! THE BOX CONCEPT AGAIN. However the lightning makes the music video balanced and really the box concept really isn’t show able.

Live Performance

WOW. The dance is really difficult. First your lying on the ground, doing scissor kicks and c-walking (?), next minute your standing up and jumping. Yes, you may think it is easy but with the extra odd dance moves, you probably need more than a few people and made extra hands to tangle you out of this mess.

And Rating?

Whoses kidding. 9/10. Great song, dance moves and music video.

Have Fun Watching. Troy 😀
