[Review] Sunshower – Boyfriend

The honest reality of the KPOP industry is that if you don’t make comebacks, you will be forgotten and that is what is happening to Boyfriend. Their last promotion cycle was with Star last year. Donghyun went on The Unit for a second chance (and just missed out on a spot in UNB). And while that show has wrapped a few months ago, there has yet to be any comeback. There was one release, Sunshower, which was released one week ago as a single for their fans in celebration of their 7th year anniversary.

Sunshower is a ballad that is about remembering the good memories, which is a fitting topic for fans. It is a good ballad with nice vocals and harmonies. You can hear the happiness in their voices, as it isn’t a typical emotional ballad about a breakup. I find that an important aspect of the song and I feel that they did a good job of conveying the nostalgic emotion. The rapping was extremely well done. The song picked up right when the raps started off the second verses, which allowed the raps to fit right in. My only main beef against the song is that I don’t really connect with it and hence, I find it quite plain. Maybe it is because I am not 100% a fan but rather an occasional listener. It may be because I have forgotten about them. Either way, I just find the song quite dry and bland.

The music video does a good job of conveying the song in a visual context. It shows the members when they were younger, while at school. They spend their days in art class, playing soccer or enjoying their youth in the rain. Throughout the video, we see the members sitting around class or arriving at the school, which holds their precious memories and remember those nostalgic moments with each other. It is a touching video.

[Review] Star – Boyfriend

Starship Entertainment has finally opened their dungeon doors and allowed Boyfriend to see the light of day. Boyfriend, after a 2-year Korean hiatus, has finally made their long awaited comeback with Star. We last saw them in 2015 with the release of Bounce. And while they have been busy in Japan, they were absent from the Korean stage for those two years.

It seems that moving from the cutesy sound their debut with to the masculine and tough energy they grew into was not enough for Boyfriend. Star is a much more mature and emotional sound, something that they haven’t really done before. And while it is a decent song to listen to, it just doesn’t have much going on in it. It is great to listen to from time to time or if it randomly pops up on my playlist but it doesn’t have me going back for more. There were parts that felt very dry and bland. Their vocals do attempt to bring some colour to the plain instrumental but it isn’t enough. The chorus was decent, with a drop that delivers with a little momentum but it wasn’t catchy enough for me. Minwoo’s sing-rap was probably the biggest letdown in the entire track but Kwangmin’s strong and fast output was probably the highlight of the entire track. Overall, the song isn’t the brightest star out there at the moment, but it still does provide some light.

The music video for Star reminded me of NU’EST’s music videos. The artistic approach to the video made it a video that I wanted to go back to. The aesthetics were amazing. That zoomed in water droplet and some of the sets looked quite cool. The cinematography was also commendable. The only thing that managed to irk me was the extremely slow ‘flying in the air’ scenes after Minwoo was hit by the car. That was painfully slow to watch, especially after more of the normal speed stuff like the choreography that was inserted between the slow scenes. It didn’t make a terrible impact on the video but it was something that I felt while watching the video. Overall, it was still a great video.

I have yet to see the full performance so I will update a little more once I can find one. But what I saw in the video suited the song quite nicely. It could have been better if it managed to be a little more impactful if you know what I mean. As I said, I have yet to see the full performance to be sure, but that is what I got from the video.

Rewind: March 2015

Through this new segment (Finally got to use that one word), we will be looking back at the third month of 2015. I get to rank my top 10 songs. But we also get to look back at other events that happened in the Korean music industry. This way, I can talk about big events in the KPOP industry and rely my thoughts to you all.

Lee Min Ho and Suzy Dating

This by far is the biggest news of March 2015. Just a few days ago, it was confirmed by both companies that Miss A’s Suzy and Hallyu actor Lee Min Ho are officially dating. More importantly, JYP (Suzy’s company) have announced that Suzy would not avoid questions regarding the couple. Now, usually companies try to “Hush” the rumours, so I thought it was a little wierd that JYP would say Suzy would be answering all questions. Though I get that both companies would have to confirm due to the evidence presented, but I think JYP is milking everything they can out of this big piece of news. Dating in the industry is going to be hard but I wish the very best for the two. Now let’s move along with Miss A‘s comeback, shall me?

Red Velvet First Win

The subheading says it all. Congratulations to Red Velvet on their first music show win. At the time I am writing this, they actually have won 4 music show awards. Their latest song is ________________________________________________________________. Sorry. Let’s leave this here and wait for the review to come out. Soon. I promise. I am not YG. It will come soon. Like next week probably.

2AM Members Change Companies

Another big piece of news with the 2AM members splitting up with their company. No, they are not disbanding (though it sounded a lot like it at first) but 2AM members have decided to go with different companies. Jo Kwon decided to stay with JYP Entertainment. Seulong decided to go with SidusHQ and Jinwoon decided with Mystic Entertainment. Changmin signed with Big Hit after his contract ended with JYP last year (I think?). This kind of says something about JYP Entertainment, but at the same time, we should be glad the ballad group are not going away for now. Let’s hope 2AM comebacks with a new song with this different formation with companies. (On a side note: all 2PM members – contract ended around the same time – resigned with JYP).

Comebacks for April

BIG BANG HAS BEEN CONFIRMED!!! Though, not exactly sure when the comeback is exactly. But BIG BANG HAS BEEN CONFIRMED to be the first YG artist making their comeback in 2015. On top of that, EXID will be making their comeback. Miss A and EXO just made their comeback at the end of the month. Dal Shabet, Mamamoo, Cross Gene have also be confirmed. SNSD (Girl’s Generation) will also be making their comeback in May BUT they will be releasing a track during April in both Japan and Korea.

Yewon and Lee Tae Im Scandal

This scandal I am not familiar with. Essentially what happened is that Yewon spoke informally to Lee Tae Im. After Lee Tae Im got angry and left, Yewon decided to curse out at Lee Tae Im, and hence causing this controversy. Essentially, Yewon is more of a younger person in the industry, so she had to be formal. I get it sometimes. I come from as Asian background and sometimes I don’t think the formality thing is right. Just because they are older does not mean they are right. Imagine this: the older person is cursing the daylights out of you and your loved ones, and you “disrespectfully” defended yourself and your family. Is the older person right and you are at fault? Though this is not what had happened, it seems like the industry zooms in on one part and leave the rest out for every bad situation. We don’t know 100% what happened. We will never know what 100% happened. Something could have happened before that got both angry. Those are just my loosely put together thoughts on the whole thing. Maybe Yewon is in the wrong. But what if she isn’t? Remember I am not siding with her. I am just being “opened minded” about things.

Bounce – Boyfriend

It seems like Starship now knows what is going on for Boyfriend. And now, just a couple of months after Witch, they are back with Bounce. Yes, Bounce. There are a lot of songs names with Bounce in the KPOP industry. Like how each year “I Love You” and “Lonely” pop up. I guess we can add “Bounce” to that list. Hahahahaha… Anyway, nothing has been happening for the boys since Witch. Well, Witch won the boys their first weekly music award on SBS MTV Show, which is quite a milestone for the boys since it has been like 3 years and a bit since their debut. Maybe they will win this time around as well?

The first time I heard the song I thought I clicked on the wrong song. The start of Bounce reminds me so much of Witch for some reason. I am really torn about this song. It is not that bad, but it isn’t that great. I liked the chorus especially that “Bounce more” voice we hear. Probably catchiest part. But the boys seem to be lacking this time around. I guess this time they are more focused on the dance than the song itself. The vocals and rapping have improved. Not entirely sure of the bridge. Vocally, it is out of place. I honestly don’t like random pauses in the middle of the songs and usually, you need to pick the beat up straight away. The instrumental was pretty good. Just minus the pause.

The music video went for an Alice in Wonderland concept which honestly looked quite cool. It seems like Boyfriend is going for more of that fantasy kind of concepts. Each character (from commentators on YouTube) have been played by the members which is honestly pretty cool. Just to me, they all look like Korean dudes wearing ridiculously costumes. When the twins are just staring around and painting that white object kind of gave me chills. From what I understand, the girl (who I assume is Alice) have all wooed the boys and the dudes all remember her fondly (as per the flashbacks). When she reappears, the boys are surprised and runs to her, only to have her disappeared once again. Then they drop down the hole. Wait, I think a scene (or a couple) are missing. I liked the set. It made it look mysterious and fitted the dark style the boys were going for.

The dance was pretty cool as well. There was a lot of sexual bouncing. In terms of crotch grabbing. But the chorus was pretty good. I like how the boys are running around on stage to get to their next spot and they make it seem pretty cool. To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed. This dance did not top Witch which was midly disappointing but it did do its job.

Oh I nearly forgot. Why would you shave your head? let the twins grow their hair out. They look really bad and a lot like … twins. Can’t tell the difference now. But anyway. 7/10

Catch Up Review #8 – Teen Top, BTOB, VIXX, Boyfriend

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These groups are seen as the next generation boy bands and are currently rising to be the next top boy groups in South Korea. And this review consist of 4 songs, let’s move along now.

Missing – Teen Top

To fans out there, I am going to apologise to you guys. This song was much a bore for me. It was not appealing. I just listened to it once and then forgot about it. The vocals were so so and the rapping was okay, however it was not as great as Teen Top’s last song Rocking. The music video was pretty dark. I have to give points for such an amazing set though, which enhanced the darkness. From what I can see, CAP and this girl used to go out, but then CAP got a little addicted to partying or something, which caused his girlfriend to break off. He then (and I only assume) takes his life. L.Joe is a friend of both (as per seen in flashbacks) and is deeply sadden by both the death of his friend but also sadden to see the girl sad. He helps her get back on their feet, however both cannot forget CAP. Fortunately enough, L.Joe and the girl realized that both are there for each other and bond. The dance was pretty cool, however it just felt empty. 4/10

Witch – Boyfriend

This song has a latin feel to it, which makes it sound pretty nice. The “Cause your body goes boom bara boom” is pretty catchy. The music video on the other hand… The band suits the dark theme (why haven’t they attempted this when they debuted?) but the acting in this is so horrible. Everything was exaggerated from what I saw.  That final fight scene, made the whole group look so pathetic. Moving away from the music video. The dance was phenomenal. The use of the curtains made the whole thing fresh and original. I was so amazed. And the curtains were not just in the background, they were used to cover up the people not dancing or singing. Just wow… 5/10 (most taken away because of the video, but the song is definitely one to check out.)

You’re So Fly – BTOB

This is a pretty catchy song. It just lacked the ability to be very memorable. I honestly expected something like Beep Beep, which had a more serious tone to it. Though, the vocals and rapping were okay, just they don’t yell out at me. The music video is protrayed in a humorous way, where the shop keeper tries to get the boys to recognise the beauty in the more “ugly” girls. And she does this by giving them coffee. Poor Sungjae though, only getting one drop and hence the love potion not working on him. Dance was also pretty cool. And I guess chairs are the new trend. 6/10

Error – VIXX

I think I am starting to become addicted with this band. Every title (note the word title) song that they released, I get strangely addicted to. However this song, really does not have that VIXX feel that we all know of. Though, the vocals are pretty good as per usual. The music video for this song tells a story of this dude (Hongbin) and his lover. The lover dies, and Hongbin decides to create a robot version of the lover, to save him from the pain. Everything works out, just the authorities come in and finds out that the lover robot is illegal. Hongbin saves her from the authorities and then take their lives to be together forever. Great acting from the characters though.  The dancing here was really cool, especially the ending where they pull the plugs out of their necks. 7/10

Ahhh.. finally. Done this review. The next review actually does not have a theme to it. Sadly. However, I can tell you that AOA, Hello Venus and Zhou Mi from Super Junior M will be reviewed. See you then!!!

Obsession – Boyfriend

Boyfriend is now back with a brand new song and a tougher and masculine image than before. Move away flower boys, because tough men are coming to the stage. Remember when they used to young boys that always did the cutesy concept? Now they are men. Tough looking, scary looking men. Yeah. Anyway, the guys are back with a new mini album after a whole year and a bit disappearance from the stage.   The boys last released I Yah, which they promoted on stage. Then they release On & On which they did not promote and this is their first song since. They have also been releasing many Japanese songs becoming one of the hottest Japanese – Korean artists currently. Anyway, on with the review.

This song is pretty cool. I liked it. It was catchy, the instrumental was pretty cool. The vocals were awesome, though a little more power would have made the song really awesome. The rapping was pretty good. I thought it was going to be another one of those really bad sounding songs so I did not pay attention to them at first, but then I heard the song on one of the kpop shows, and I instantly searched it up and was so surprised. It seems like they know finally how to reel in the fans, by throwing away the cutesy concept and tackling the more dark and serious concept. This song had a lot of power behind it and it made the song sound really good. I don’t think I would complain about the song at all, it was that good and it should just stay that way.

I think I have watched the video before, but I don’t think I paid that much attention to it. From a foreigner’s perspective, those scenes with the really cool octagon library does not really fit the music video. Hell, it does not even match the song at all. Anyway, the boys seem to try to get the girl back, but their plan backfired. Literally. Anyway, so they try to blow the current boyfriend and take the girl with them, which she wants, but unfortunately the current boyfriend holds her captive, with the same bomb that the group placed, and throws her into them, but she ends up dying. Like guys, why did you put the boy in the middle of the room? Why not like somewhere hidden? Another thing, but during those last scenes of the plot, how did the girl and her mysterious boyfriend come in? Cause it seems like they can walk through walls. And last of all, why put a knife in the video, when you know it would be blurred. Overall, I found it quite amusing to watch, but altogether, it was pretty boring.

Out of all the things I am going to say, I would love those light up stools. Not joke. I thought they are a really modern addition to the performance. I liked the dance, though I feel like there were too many people on the stage. I found it really distracting to watch. However, I think the dance was down to a reasonable standard. It matched the amount of power the song had and it looked awesome. I liked the ending and the use of the chairs. It was pretty cool.

7/10. I think this is the first Boyfriend comeback that I have been really fond of since forever. I don’t remember what I gave them last time though, but this probably did top that one.

Last week I asked you which female soloist you all liked. Jung Hyosung claimed the top spot. Congrats. Answer another poll will you? Please? Hahahaha… (It is not Boyfriend related though)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!!

It is finally Christmas and I am excited! And the year is already up. Sadly though. However, shall we continue with a more different review this time around? But before that, I just would like to wish everyone who will read this post a Merry Christmas. Enjoy your time, with family, friends or anyone else. Be thankful and be safe. Let’s enjoy the final few days of 2013 and ready to party with 2014. Anyway, today, it is really more of an impromptu review. Not score will be given for these reviews. I have review Lonely Christmas by Crayon Pop and Miracle Of December by EXO. There are however four more Christmas songs that I want to review and today will be three song reviews in one! Shall we get started???

Christmas Song – United Cube

United Cube is back with a lovely slow Christmas song that showcases the groups under A Cube Entertainment and Cube Entertainment. The artists in this song include: Beast, 4Minute, APink, G.Na, Huh Gak, Roh Ji Hoon, BTOB and Oh Ye Ri. Wow that is a lot of artists. Also included is Kim Gi Ri, the comedian for Gag Concert. The song has this soft tune that reminds you of a warm Winter’s night, like Christmas Night. Though the song starts off really slow and it takes quite a while for it enter a more Christmas-like song, by the end, you are bound to remember those warm Christmas nights with your loved ones. I think the rap was handle really well in this song which is pretty good, considering how raps tend to ruin a good song. And the whole song, vocally, sounds amazing.

 Love Falls – Romantic J

Now we are getting into the more festive songs. This song may sound like a love song, which it is. I really love the jingle bell feel of the instrumental and how the vocals in this song are not hard hitting as powerful vocals. Though Jonghyun from CNBlue does not have as much lines as Juniel, the song still sounds amazing. His husky voice fits the tone of Juniel’s voice which makes the song have this beautiful duet. The song is quite addictive and sounds really good. I have been lipsyncing to this song since it came out. Though the music video may seem more of a romantic story, the song still carries the Xmas cheer. Yay! Also, this is a duo that I would love to hear more from.

Winter Propose – Jellyfish Entertainment

This song is the only song that is really close to those Christmas carols we here every year. Not exactly what I like, but it still does. It features all the artists of Jellyfish Entertainment including: VIXX, Seo In Guk, Sung Si Kyung, Park Hyo Shin and also a mysterious female singer (do I hear a singer debuting next year?). This song sounds amazing and really has that festive cheer to the song. It combines all of the artists of Jellyfish Entertainment and amazes me a lot. Though I was not much of a fan of their previous Christmas song and also their more experienced singers, this song gives you that warm feeling that makes you remember Christmas day and eve a lot.

Snow Candy – Starship Planet

The final song which gives off the happiest Christmas feeling of the year. It features Sistar, K.Will and Boyfriend and seems the most enjoyable song out there for memories of family and friends. Again, this song, along with the others vocally sounds amazing and the rap seemed to be handle really well by Bora and the Boyfriend rappers. Of course K.Will and Hyorin holds the main vocal part of this whole company venture, but with this song, I am going to let it slide. The music video also seems to be the most festive one out of the four. Pity that Dasom from Sistar was not a part of the filming, but probably have featured in the he song somewhere. Not sure where though.

Thank you for spending another year with me. Merry Christmas to all, wherever you are on this planet. Be happy and I will see you next time!!!!

I Yah – Boyfriend

Source; http://seoulbeats.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/20130113_seoulbeats_Boyfriend-620×500.png

Boyfriend has finally made their comeback with their repackaged album of Janus, with the song, I Yah. After achieving a much larger fan base with a much more mature concept then their last few releases, this comeback was quite anticipated by fans.

To be honest, I was looking forward to this comeback by the boys. However when I first heard the song, I was quite disappointed by the standards that Janus had given them. However, after a few good listens to it, I actually quite like the song. I Yah does not have any meaning, like there is no translation for it. It makes the chorus of the song, quite hard to understand, for me, but that is because I am stupid. I quite like the rap sections of the song, which fits the concept quite well. The ending of the song, was did not grab me like what the raps did to me. It was out of place and definitely did not fit the feel of the song at all. The vocals were pretty okay, but it could’ve have been better. However, I liked the instrumental of the song, from the guitar to the drums. It was like an electro band beat.

The music video is pretty cool. For the dance parts in particular, those cameras which filmed the members dancing while leaving the heads still and then the camera starts to get very shaky are pretty cool but at the same time, quite freaky. I liked the set for the dance parts too: they give off this manly feel to the whole music video. As for the plot of the storyline in this music video is quite interesting. We see a girl who is getting confessed to by most of the band members, however she only chooses one. Yeah, that is okay, but those guys seem to be quite obsessive. In a particular scene, she is sitting in class talking to her friends. Then another guy goes up to her, and starts chatting up. Jealous or just plain obsessive, the madly in love guy is really angry and shoos the chatting guy and the girls friend. Yeah, that is just not the right way to treat your girlfriend. Exactly what made you appealing to her in the first place is quite confusing.

The live is pretty good. The dance had a lot of rubbing in it. Wink Wink. Yeah, but beside that, it was okay. It could’ve been better. I liked the ending though. It really fitted the concept of the comeback.

7/10. Pretty good.

Janus – Boyfriend

Source: http://img.ohkpop.com/2012/11/20/Br57Nu13.jpg

Boyfriend came back with another song after Love Style in mid-November. Back with a more mature and quite different side of the boys, that we have never seen. The music video is quite interesting, while the song is a bit too much for me. But beside, this is a comeback that I looked forward too a lot.

The song is really too much for me. I am used to these horrible, non-addictive songs that have cute lyrics and aegyo lines for guys to sing. Yeah, this song is horrible and at the same time does not really portray Boyfriend properly. For me, it would be really hard if you sang songs that showed a more mature side. Keeping that in mind, it would be extra hard if you go back to cutey songs. B1A4 pulled it off perfectly, but I am not sure about the Boyfriend guys at this moment. Janus, to me, does not draw out the vocals of the group as much as their previous song. However, the rapping in this song is definitely fierce and fits the feel of the song. I am proud of Minwoo and the twin that raps. This song does not have a catchy chorus for me and for some reason the start of the song always seem to put me off.

However, beside me disliking the song, I quite enjoyed the music video. It was very interesting. Now, I wish to raise the point. The two twins are very hard to differentiate. Especially in this music video, I cannot tell who is who at all. Like come on, make it easier for the viewers!!!! Anyway, Janus is the Roman (Or Greek) God of two face, time and all sorts of things. In this music video, they use the twins really well, as if they are one person and mirrors them into two different universes like Hell and Heaven. While the others in Hell are sickened with the twins heartbreak, Heaven is more comforting and calm with the situation. That I really like. I do like the scenery of the music video for the two worlds, as Hell is dark while Heaven is full of light. Really well done.

The live was not that good, for this song. I found the dance a bit to mainstream for a song that meant more mature, and every time they jump, they remind me of their debut days. Not that great.

Anyway, I give this song a 6/10. Some major bad points, but overall good. Hopefully, they will come out with a much better song for their comeback this Wednesday.

Love Style – Boyfriend

Song

This is the first Boyfriend song that I liked. I was not really fond of them in Boyfriend and Don’t Touch My Girl because the songs sounded quite cheesy and kind of to cutey boy song, which I am not really fond of. This however is actually quite cheesy and a cutey boy song, but I don’t it as annoying as the other two songs. I think when I first heard I was hooked onto the song straight away. While most of you guys, (hopefully, big generalization here) are relaxing Summer heat, We Southern Hemisphere people, particularly in Melbourne, Australia are freezing our butts off due to the Winter weather. Yeah, I know this is normal for some countries, but I am hopeless in the cold. 12 degrees is so freaking freezing for me. Don’t ask, I am weak.

Anyway, I really like the chorus in the song and the rap. I just found the English in the song a bit concerning. Not sure if that is the right word, but “We’re Right” in this song, sounds like another language was added to the song. I did like the beat and instrumental of the song.

Music Video

I found this music video pretty good, despite it being a cutey boy song. The only thing I am definitely am not sure of is the floral suits. Not cool, not that great. Pretty bad. Actually the only down side to the whole video. But beside that, I really liked those hanging light sticks thing. They look quite nice. Me want.

Live Performance

Same with the floral suits. Not cool. I did find most of the dance quite good, despite it being like other dances by Boyfriend. But I just noticed, while typing this up, they have good dance, but don’t really fit into the type of song they are singing. Anyone with me there? Or is it just me?

And The Rating?

Pretty good for a band that I am not technically fond of. 8/10.

Have Fun Watching. 😀 Troy
